Piston slap or something else?
I have a 2003 w/ auto trans that I've owned for about 5 months/2000miles. The car has been driven less than 34K total. I have been using chevron 91 octane gas exclusively. The previous owner said used costco/price club 91 octane.
Since owning the car I have noticed a slight knocking sound when I first start the car however it seems to disappear once the car is warmed up to 190F+. In screening some posts this might be attributed to the LS1 piston slap.
When I test drove the car I only did what I would call some moderate acceleration and everything sounded fine. Recently, now that the car is mine, I've tried some more agressive acceleration. Under this more agressive acceleration I have noted some knocking or pinging or similar sound. So I am wondering if the sound I'm hearing is the piston slap or something like detonation. I would apperciate comments or input from anyone that has experienced something similar.
Again under normal to moderate acceleration everything appears to sound fine. The previous owner is 70 years old, owned the car for about 6 years and I think kind of babied it.
Thanks
I won't question your own experience with Chevron gas. However I have been using Chevron (w/Techron) 89 octane in my daily driver (2010 Genesis Coupe, 3.8L V6, 6AT) for over 2 years and have had no issues at all.
I did pull the codes (thanks for the link) and they are as follows:
28 TCS--C1214 H
60 IPC--B1543 H, B0516 H
AO LDCM--B2282 H, B2284 H, U1064 H
A1 RDCM--B2283 H, B2285 H, U1064 H
I did look up these codes and nothing appears to be engine related. The TCS code explains a different issue.
I'll give the different gas a try. If there is a carbon issue as you suggest what are the possible fixes?
Thanks
