Default Gas lid

I have a 98 rag top every time I stop to refill and close the lid it will pop back open in or around 30 seconds it will do this 4 to 5 times before it stops opening. It's not cool driving down the road with your hand out the window shutting it. Has anyone ever experienced this it so please tell me whats going on & how to fix it

Check the little black part that the lid catches on and ensure it engages all the way out everytime you push it in with your finger. If not, try some WD40. Also check that the part of the lid hasn't somehow bent so that it doesn't catch well.

Then check the manual release cable to see if it is somehow affecting it. In my coupe you can pull back the carpet just aft of the speaker to reveal the whole solenoid assembly. I'm not sure what the vert looks like in that area.

After that I'd check to make sure the realease button in the center console isn't somehow gummed up. Then I'm all out of ideas.

I recall some threads a few years ago about someones fuel door plunger failing due to water contamination. The spring literally fell apart in pieces when disassembled.

I'm pretty sure you have to remove the inner fender liner to access the plunger.

Mine would not consistently open with the console switch. So I lightly lubed the fuel door latch and tip of the plunger. Then the darn thing opened to easily even when I removed 99.9% of the white lithium lube.

Be very careful if you decide to tweak the latch on the fuel door. The latch is heavier gauge than the sheet metal fuel door.

I have the same damn problem just recently started, and i have to pop the trunk to wiggle the manual release cable in order for the stopper to extend all the way. I tried wd-40 and other tricks and nothing works. everytime i fill up i have to mess w the cable to get it out far enough to catch the door. irritating as all hell

Irritating as all hell for sure I'm gone 6 months out of the year with my job & between it and my Harley (my true baby) not made time to mess with it but going to this time in. It's hard enough for a 50 year old man trying to be cool let alone cruising down the road shutting his fuel lid at 70 miles an hour Thanks Guys
