Typical self locking nut IMHO. Have seen these in MANY applications. This is not an April Fools reply.

I have had my transmission off twice, and they are round on mine. By the way, don't use power tools when bolting up those four nuts. The pin/screw will snap, and that will not be fun.

I know for a fact that I only removed those nuts on mine, one time only.

I didn't notice them being oval at the time, but they very well could have been.
I reused then, & they have never loosened.
I commonly check the bolts/nuts on the suspension of my car, throughout the years.
Good luck.
1 time before I bought it original owner had it off cause car has RPM Level 4 and a up-graded 30 spline diff. Myself 2 times Had a shop put a LS7 Clutch install then had Motor and TT rebuilt so mabey 3 times total that I can tell.

the studs coming out of the car are solid no issues with them that I can tell going out to the Garage now to look at everything again today

I think you're looking at p/n 72 here, which seems to be NLA:

IMHO, if you're concerned, blue Loctite them when you reinstall and torque to spec.
