Default Weld zo6 titanium exhaust

How difficult is it to weld the pipes back on? Is it possible?
Is it expensive?
Thanks

Titanium isn't that difficult to weld. The problem is that titanium welding rods are VERY expensive and most welders do not have it in stock.

I bought my Ti's very cheap because they had been cut. I phoned several welders and the answer was always the same: "If you can get me the rod, I can weld it". I finally found someone who had access to the rod. He was in the airline industry. I found him by posting in the Regional section of this forum. You could try doing the same in your area.

What are you nwelding? I have slip joints in my exhaust, every thing just slides together and is held in place with clamps. Same for the Ti's i had for about 3 years...

I tried but couldn't find anyone in the OKC metro a few years back that could do it.

Default Weld

The pipes have been cut a few inches before the muffler
Can they be clamped? Must they be welded?

Once you find the Ti welding rod, you will have to have them welding in an oxygen free environment. Oxygen weakens the weld.

This sounds like a real problem. Can they be clamped instead of welded?
How long would a standard weld last?

By standard welding I assume you mean no shielding gas. If a titanium weld contacts oxygen during cool down then it is weakened to be useless.

Read this section on shielding gas.

If a shielding gas is required for titanium, all you would do by using standard rods would be to make burn marks all over it and not get the metal to accept the flux.

If you were able to get it to hold initially, it would probably brek off from vibration.

As someone that does quite a bit of welding, I would recommend finding someone that knows what they are doing. I'vE only worked with steel, stainless, and some cast, but never titanium... So I can't speak from experience.

You should be able to with those 2 1/2" wide band clamps.
Of course it depends on where your cuts are...

I've decided to pass on the purchase. The guy selling them thought it was an easy job. About an hour. NOT
Thanks for the advice. On with the search.

Ti can be tig welded pretty easily though everyone and their mother will tell you otherwise. For exhaust just cap the ends and fill with constantly flowing argon. I do it the redneck way and just crank up the argon flow on the torch and use a large cup with a diffuser. If the weld hits oxygen before it cools enough you know it as it will change a shade of purple. I wouldn't do it on a roll cage but wouldn't hesitate on an exhaust. Ti rod can be bought in small quantities on ebay. If the cut is real clean you might get away with fusion welding it, no rod needed.
