Thinking about installing a Callaway Honker on my '04.
Searched here but couldn't find where this question had been asked.
Are there any problems with driving in heavy rain with where the element is located? Could it get soaked?
I don't plan on driving through big puddles but, should one sneak up on me, how likely would water saturation of the element to the point of air restriction be?
I asked this on Callaway's web site but, my question must be a low priority to them as I haven't heard anything for awhile.
I would, most likely, install a screen at the bottom in the rad intake area also.

Sonny,
Sorry for any delay however, I don't see where your question was previously asked.
On our 2003 test and development Corvette, I drove through plenty of rain, never an issue. Of course, one would always want to be prudent, not intentionally submerging the nose of the car in puddles of magnitude. This is a good course of action, regardless of the air inlet.
The Callaway Honker delivers the most airflow of any intakes we tested - and at the time, we tested them all!
I run the hoonker. Not really sure about the water saturation question. I don't drive I'n rain much; however, if you do you should be fine. It not like your goin mudding thru puddles. That filter sits way up I'n the shroud area which makes the hoonker an even better filter as far as rain/water gos. My biggest fear is brushless auto car washes with underbody spray feature. I've taken mine thru them before but no longer do so. They can shoot water rite up there. The screen is a good idea to keep leaves and trash out of there. I need to do one myself and clean my filter y I'm at it. I dont remember for sure but the hoonker filter should be washable like my K&n. All I'n all, this is the best cold air IMO. You will be happy with it.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I didn't realize a rep was on here! Good to know though.
Yes, I wouldn't expect it to survive being submerged, I was just concerned how likely it would be if I were to hit a puddle deep enough to where the air dam would scoop some up and splash the cut out area.
Guess with any true cold air intake, that's a chance one has to take.
My Honker-equipped C5 is going into its 4th year as my daily driver -- that means rain, snow, whatever.
Never a problem. One time I drove through somewhat deep water without thinking. I was sweating it, but obviously there was still space where air (which obviously weighs much less and so will get sucked in 100% provided water is not so high as to create a vacuum) could get into the intake. That "pucker" event is burned into my memory so I am now reasonably cautious in heavy downpours, but it has never been an inconvenience.
Having driven C5's with and without the Honker, I think it is one of the few bolt-ons that makes a noticeable difference.
Never a problem with mine, had it on for around 5 years and used it as my daily driver until I got my C6 last summer. I live on the Gulf Coast where we can get torrential downpours at the drop of a hat and have had to go through some unavoidable fairly deep puddles as well!
I installed a Honker a few months ago. I don't drive in the rain, but I can tell you I'm glad I finally installed one. It looks oem so it doesn't look so obvious. The MAF gets moved next to the throttle body which I like. CALLAWAY did a nice job of engineering this product.
My butt isn't calibrated or certified but there is definitely an improvement at mid range and top end. FWIW, I used a HALLTECH honeycomb air flow straightener on mine so there's no lean bank codes as is common with many after market intakes.
I didn't care for the provided large rivets in the kit though. I used stainless allen head screws from underneath and expanding threaded rubber inserts in the frame, instead. Measure 2-3 times before you cut to make the shroud modification as clean and accurate as possible.
FYI, there's a used Honker for sale in the classifieds as of today. It's being offered with the shroud as well. I don't know the seller and have nothing to do with the sale. Just passing on information.
Any pics? I would like to see your custom install.

I've also had my Honker on for several years and have never had any issues with it. I don't normally drive it in rain, but I have on occasion been in some heavy downpours. I've not had any problems even when the road has been well saturated. I also have a screen to catch large debris, a worthwhile addition. As far as opening up the foglight surrounds on non-Z06's, the Honker gets all its air from below only, the front will make no difference.

Like the others here, I like mine and can highly recommend the Callaway Honker. OEM quality of materials and good, solid design. I've also driven in some heavy downpours with no issues.
I bought mine from another forum member a few years ago and it came with the Green filter. I located another Green Performance Filter at Zip Products, just like the original, and rotate filters come cleaning time so no downtime. Part #PM-537

Thanks. Is the OEM Z06 intake different than the non Z06 intake? I thought the OEM Z06 screens were designed to pass air through the intake? I have to take a closer look at mine to see where the fog light surrounds route air.
I used the Honker on both my C5 and C6 and never had any problem with water ,I did however enjoy the increased performance . Very well engineered product with fit and finish to match. I think it is the best choice out there..I am getting ready to purchase another car and it will also get the Callaway treatment..
I've had my Honker on for four years and routinely drive in rain with no problems. I have had one problem with the Honker - the rubber coupler that goes between the MAF sensor and the throttle body became so stiff and seemed to shrink, such that when I took it off, I could not get it back onto the throttle body -nohow -no way. I ended up buying a silicone reducer coupler to replace it and it works fine Because the silicone coupler is black the change is not noticeable.
I found this annoying, but otherwise the Honker quality is great.
I am planning on sizing an Amsoil filter to replace the cloth filter because the Amsoil apparently does a much better filtering job.
