Best Vette Road Trips
So summer is coming up fast, and its time to start planning some road trips and want to hear some opinions. Anyone want to share a great trip/pics/ or experiences cruising around town?
One of my favorite spots isout west of I81, west of I66. Old highway 55 between Wardensville and Mathias is a great stretch of highway to open the cut outs and go thru the gears and enjoy a summer day. Last summer it was so hot my hand kept slipping off the shift ***.
I am thinking about driving down to Louisiana or down to the outer banks this summer. Anyone else planning anything?

The "Tail Of The Dragon" is a Vette favorite.

I'm the new guy here but gotta reply to this one.. Got my vette outta Vegas and drove it to Ontario Canada last month.. I was floored at the stunning scenary On the I-15 north to the I-70 and then headed east through Colorado.. The canyons in Colorado are the perfect place to realize what a great car the Z06 is.. Wish i had time to explore up to Salt Lake city..Next trip!

A return trip to the Pacific Northwest in early August to get away from the heat in Oklahoma.
U.S. 12 from Missoula, MT to Lewiston, ID across Lolo pass is one of the best Corvette/motorcycle roads in the country. A little closer to home is Arkansas "Scenic" Seven from Hot Springs to Bull Shoals, coming back home via U.S. 62 through Eureka Springs but it is pretty hot in the summer.
It gets hot in Louisiana in the summer as well, or should I say steamy?

Last June I bought my 04 CE in Calif and drove it home here to NH - took my time and had a blast. Drove from LA to Sedona, AZ, Grand Canyon, Bryce Nat'l Park, Capital Reef Nat'l Park, Natural Arches Nat'l Park, Canyonland Nat'l Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills Nat'l Park, Mt Rushmore (including the Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway), Badlands Nat'l Park. All fun drives but the most spectacular thrilling drive for a Vette I have ever driven was the Escalante Grand Staircase ( Highway 12 ) in Utah - just an incredible drive makes any other drive I have done seem flat. Incredible scenic views , lots of switchbacks, lots of steeps, twisties , I remember the temperature at one point being in the 90's and another point the temp was in the 60's - if I remember correctly the drive was about 100 miles long - I drove it mid week and had the road to myself and had a blast what an awesome drive !
In my 2001 Coupe I have driven Tail of the Dragon, Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive, Pocono's in PA, Catskills in NY, Green Mts of Vt and White Mts of NH, the mountains in Western Maryland heading to Bowling Green were a lot of fun too - all great drives.

Get on the A62 towards Trier. It's open Autobahn so once the engine oil gets up to temp open it up and see if you can hit 300kph ;-)
Then take the exit towards the Mosel River and head down the winding country roads until you hit the river. Enjoy the crackle of your pipes off the rock outcroppings along the road. Stop in a wine village for lunch and a glass for your passenger. Finish in Traben-Trarbach, park the Vette and go sample some of the local wines.
Rinse. Repeat as needed

Top off and windows down and drive the Florida east coast.....although,
I remember some years ago, in a peice of crap rental car, the drive from Los Angeles on the Pacific Coast Highway, up to San Francisco.

We just did a trip from Dallas to LA, then up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Fran, and then stopped by the Grand Canyon on the way back. While in LA we did Mulholland Drive, which was really cool. The PCH is especially nice through the Big Sur area. It was a lot of miles, but since we were combining it with seeing her family in Phoenix, LA and San Fran it wasn't too bad. Here are a few pics of the car and my fiance:

The Cherahalla Parkway at the NC end of the tail of the dragon is a lot more fun than the tail itself (and a lot safer since bikers usually stay away from there.)

Tail of the Dragon
A group from our car club ( Corvettes of Western Ontario ) are planning a trip to the Museum and then to the Blue Ridge Parkway . Going to go to the Biltmore house in Ashville . Where exactly is the Tail of the Dragon as from the comments it is worthwhile to incorpoate it into our trip . Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated .

The "Tail of the Dragon" is near Knoxville/maryville Tennessee. It is actually US highway 129 where it crosses over the mountain between TN and NC. There are over 100 very sharp turns in around 13 miles of road. It is a bikers paradise and a few die on it every year pretending they know how to ride fast.
The biggest problem driving 129 (the dragon) is meeting a biker head on when he is apexing on the edge of control and crosses the line into your lane.

If you plan on driving the "Tail of the Dragon" I would strongly recommend doing it mid-week - like mentioned earlier on weekends the Tail is loaded with motorcyclists and some of them will be right on your rear bumper.
when is your group heading down to the Museum ?
