Ability to Shift from 2nd - 4th: Feature or Limiting Factor
My understanding is that the feature provides the driver the ability to move directly into 4th gear from 2nd (gas saving feature). However, for those who would rather run through the gears, does this feature become a nuisance or a limiting factor from a perfromance perspective? My understanding is that when the indicator light is on, the driver has no choice but to shift into 4th . Is this correct? Do you simply work around it by reving higher and waiting for the light to turn off before shifting?

This feature doesnt really bother me because i tend to shift to 2nd when i am around 3500 rpm anyways. It only kicks in around 15-19 mph. Just step on it until you are past 20mph and you wont have to worry about anything.

Thanks!
Yes, when the 1 to 4 indicator light is on is the only time it will shift that way.
But it is very easy to drive around this skip shift feature. Just never shift from 1st to 2nd gear when the RPMs are between 2000 and 2500 ... a very narrow range. Also, if you do not completely stop, the skip shift will NOT engage. California stops work great in this department.
Alot of guys put a skip shift elimiator in the car, which is a resistor that plugs into the skip shift wiring harness to fool the computer to not engage the skip shift feature. Personally, I just drive around it ... just need to be smarter than the CAGS I guess. :D
Re: Ability to Shift from 2nd - 4th: Feature or Limiting Factor (rjcruz)
Initially I planned to 'drive around' the 1-4 shift, but it always seemed to get me at the wrong time .. like when you're behind some really slow driver or in the middle of a turn, etc. You can bypass CAGS permanently with a $.50 resistor or a $20 connector, and in my opinion it's well worth doing. I understand GM's need to put in on the car .. but I'd prefer to shift when I want to.

ROYAL PITA.
If I wanted to save gas I would be driving a Volkswagen
GET RID OF IT. The darn thing is a SAFETY HAZARD anyway.
This is a CORVETTE for chriks sake! Folks that buy these things know how to drive them and don't need any Computer Aided Gear Selection.
If I WANTED that I'd have bought a coupe with an automatic.
I'm comfortable with the computer controling a lot of other stuff but NOT my gear changing.
Worry about CAFE on the Monte and the Cavalier, not the CORVETTE!

It depends on your driving. I just rev a little higher and don't have to worry about it. If you do get the light you need to shift from 1st to 4th, no work arounds. I think you can downshift to 3rd/2nd after you shifted into 4th.
Re: Ability to Shift from 2nd - 4th: Feature or Limiting Factor (rjcruz)
Thanks to all for your responses. I have not received my Z06 yet. I will experiment with simply "driving" around it. However, I will probably do more research here to determine exactly what is required to disable this feature if it becomes a nuisance. I'm sure exact steps needed to disable is posted somewhere on this forum.
Re: Ability to Shift from 2nd - 4th: Feature or Limiting Factor (rjcruz)
There's a aftermarket part you can buy for around $20 that plugs in between the ecm and the transmission at the transmission or you can make one yourself using a resistor. The details are around here somewhere.
Re: Ability to Shift from 2nd - 4th: Feature or Limiting Factor (rjcruz)
I've owned my Z for ~ 4 wks now. At first (read before 500 miles), I was tempted to get the CAGS defeat. I have since found that rapidly moving the pedal toward the front bumper solves my problem. :D
Re: Ability to Shift from 2nd - 4th: Feature or Limiting Factor (Z-meister)
Drive around it first, then decide.
I did, and I have. Sometimes it can make the linkage will freeze momentarily, and it's not worth the risk of having a computer deny me a gear I might need or want and put the car at risk in heavy traffic where someone can rear-end it. Bypassing it is reversible and has no negative effects.
No offense meant- everybody's driving and driving conditions are different.
