I feel really stupid right now for having to ask this question.I just changed my thermostat from whatever was installed to what I thought was a 160 degree stat.My vette is now running 185 to 200 degrees and as high as 221 that is in 80 degree weather. The dic and the temp guage are pretty much in sinc.My feeling is if I install a 160 stat then I should be running around 160 degrees.I could not find on the stat what it actually is.I am thinking that I have been given a wrong stat.Any thoughts or info will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Fred

Nope, as stated already, that's just when the T-stat OPENS, has very little to do with the warmed up temps of the coolant. Reprogramming the fans has more to do with it. Generally, all the 160 stat does is make it take longer for the car to get up to temp. The temps your seeing are NORMAL, no need to fool with them.

im in AZ and installed a 180 on saturday when it was 106deg out.
let it idle in the driveway 20 min, 196 was max. took it out for a 20mile drive, never broke 199 and never below 192. following morning was 73 outside and it sat around 189-191 putzin around town gettin coffee and such. railed on it on an off ramp on the way home through 4th gear and it made its happy lil way up to 201.
all that being said, I generally think 160s shouldnt be used in our cars. its too early/cold for it to open IMO. Also, if you were gettin 220s while driving around id look at the rest of your cooling system if you indeed put a stat in and its burped properly. if I didnt get that high in my extreme AZ Temps, theres no reason yours should.

What they said. About normal. Also if part of the install was flushing the cooling system, make sure the air is purged from the cooling sytem, make sure there's no debris in the radiator cavity.
Thanks to everyone fore the information.I must be getting senile in my old age as I actually knew the mechanics of a stat.It must have momentarily left my brain. What is interesting is, I bought the 160 stat from A-Zone and I just found out that they do not carry or sell 160 degree stats. Thanks again.I feel better already

with what all the others have said. I would suggest you look up under the car and ensure that you do no have an accumulation of dirt and debri on the radiator. You will be amazed at what will wind up there and block air flow, then add to rising temps.

I'm also going to buck the crowds opinion. The 160° stat runs 167° to about 174°. My fans are still programed for the 180° I had in there. It ran 192° the fans are set at 179° and 185° If fan temp was more of a factor why does my car run lower than the fan settings with the 160° stat?
All that said I think I would like a 170° stat thinking it will run in the low to mid 180's

Well I don't know too much about thermostats, Mine has a stock thermostat, I start it up and it runs in heavy traffic at 198-205, only once in awhile it'll go toward 215, but both the gauge and the DIC read about the same. It takes a really humid, 100 degree day to get the engine up to 220-225, but never over that. just my experience? Owners manual says it's fine at those temperatures. I never knew the fans cut off at speeds over 35 MPH. I change the coolant every 5 years. But my car is pretty stock, so . . .

WHY??? My Challenger runs 220 all the time steady state, the vette is 200ish most of the time. Modern engines run HOTTER, they are DESIGNED THAT WAY. Don't "F" with it.
