Default Flat Tire Question

I have a 2000 C5 convertable and I don't have run flats. I got a passenger side rear flat. I would like to remove the tire and rim myself and I have a floor jack, but I don't know where the frame points are on the car to place the jack. How do you recommend I remove the rim and tire?

I know of two ways to accomplish raising the car enough to get the floor jack under it. If you were stuck beside the highway, you could drive the flat up onto a 2x8 or something similar. In your driveway or garage, you might be able to jack it up from behind. Do a search on this forum on how to raise the vehicle so that you know where the proper lift points are. Under the lower side panels there are two spots on each side of the car where you can place a jack. If you look, these are each identifiable by a slot in the frame. You'll need to pad the top of the floorjack with something to keep the jack from crushing your lower side panels. Most of us are using hockey pucks for this purpose and we keep them in the car just in case.

If you don't have the jacking pucks, you don't want to jack it on the side. If you have pucks, look under the car and you will see where the rocker panels have what I refer to as half circles cutout and in those cutouts you will see a slot. that is the jacking points with the pucks. I suggest that yo put a piece of wood (2x4) and place the jack under the aluminum cross mount that runs about 2 frrt in from the rear of the car.

We get nutz about this but in this instance the guy just wants to change the tire. He's not laying under the vehicle and he's not raising all four corners.

You still have to be careful but your main concern is to not crack the plastic rocker panel (the part of the car than wraps down under the car). This is not hard to do. My low profile jack has a pad (the circular steel part at the end of the lifting arm) that happens to fit right in the circular cut out you see when you look under there. If your jack doesn't fit inside that cut out so that its only touching the steel frame on the rocker panel, you can place a small piece of 2x4 (or similar , whatever fits in the cut out) on the pad and lift away. You're only lifting about six inches :-) these cars are very low, doesn't take much to get the wheel off the ground.

The cut outs on the sides are really secondary lifting areas but they are totally safe to lift on. The car is very rigid and you're not gonna hurt anything by lifting there.

Lemme see if I can find the diagram for the other lifting spots (but truth be told to change a wheel those spots are best) the other spots are a pain to get to and require a lot more discussion on how to safely lift from there.

Not the best one but take a look at post 11 here

Good luck

Something you might consider doing is invest in some jacking pucks. Comes in hand for working on the car.

If it's a nail or screw, remove and plug the tire. The don't have to remove the tire from the vehicle if this is the case.

Just go buy some hockey pucks and keep them in the car. You can also get some eye bolts and screw them through the middle of the pucks. Search on lifting pucks or just pucks. I know you'll find a write up on making a set that will lock into the frame where you can lift. You can buy them on fleabay also. I got a bag of hocky pucks (16) for cheap at sports store and then some eye bolts at hardware store. I have made a bunch and keep them in car, at home, anywhere I think I may need them, and givin them away.
