A friend of mine wants a second opinion on a brake job. He's bringing a 99 over on Sunday. Will a regular floor jack fit under these cars? Any special jacking instructions? Good place or a really bad place to put a jack stand?
No, if you look under the rockers, there are 2 areas that have a cutout in the fiberglass on each side of the car that have a slot in them.
You get 4 hockey pucks (or buy the permanent type) and screw a large hook eye through the center. You can then put the puck in place with the hook eye in the slot and then jack it...It will keep the jack away from your rockers and ensure that the fiberglass underneath stays crack free.
I found some instructions that talk about placing wood under the front and rear metal frame members and jacking from there. Is that a safe thing to do?

Yes, if you search you will find pic's of vette's being supported there. They key is to not jack in the center.
I was looking at tools for these cars and thinking about buying one just to justify a lot of new tools. New low profile jack, cool cross braces, I even saw a jackstand that wrapped around a jack so you could use the pucks lifiting area and then put the stand there.
Ok, not really. I'll stick with the old cars for a little while longer.
If you have to you can drive the car up on 2X4's so the regular floor jack will fit under it.
With 90% of floor jacks, you will probably have to drive the car up onto 1 or 2 tiers of 2x10's just to get clearance to slide the jack underneath the crossmembers. If you have a low profile jack, you should be able to get under the rocker panels, but then you'll only be able to lift one side/corner at a time.
The low-pro jack at Harbor Freight is on sale right now for $129. The low pro slides under with room to spare. Nice jack and it has a foot pump along with a beefy T handle.
I grabbed one to replace the crappy aluminum one I bought from there last year. What a piece of junk the aluminum one is.
Also, you can get the plastic pop in & leave in pucks from foreign car part supply shops too... BMW uses them. I bought a set of 4. They were $7 & change for each one.

I went to Harbor freight last Saturday and the low profile jack was on sale for $89. I went to the cashier and they tried to sell me a 2 year warranty...Of course I declined and then he said he could do the jack as a managers special for $59.99 plus $8 for the warranty!! Solid deal.

You will need a low profile floor jack to get under these cars. Once you get one of them, a set of jacking pucks and jack stands will be all you should need, besides hand tools, to get the job done. Good luck.
