Default Torque converter suggestions

Hello all,

new guy here...glad to be here

It seems I've come into the possession of a very nice 2000 C5 coupe, a life long dream come true; essentially stock except for K&N induction. Have several small issues I can work through with all the great threads in this forum...except wasted automatic transmission.

My need is this, constructive recommendations for a torque converter. This car will remain a close to stock, spirited touring car but I want/need an exceptionally well performing, robust transmission set up.

I can find little on the site about this or mebbe just mebbe, I don't know my way around here yet. Anywhooo, can you help?

Thanks, Jay

What gear are you running and what mods are you going to add? Example, if your going with a long duration high lift cam etc... you'll need a higher stall or lower gears or both as your power band will be effected. Big cams hurt low end torque so you need higher stall to get into the proper power band.
Need more info to suggest stall!

I do not plan to alter engine other than the existing K&N and adding Corsa touring exhaust, probably a chip to clean it up. I believe it has a 273 diff; an assumption...how could I tell?

There is no chip in these cars.

Ratio is on a tag on the diff to the right of the round rear cover. It will be 2.73 or 3.15

Or, if it a 3.15, look for option G92 on the sticker in the glovebox lid.

OK...it's 2.73 for sure and uhhhh...I would have ability to program with a handheld?

I'll be building a trans similar to Mad Dog Lou's stage 2 for this.

A little about me...I grew up old school Chevrolet, dare I use the term "dual point distributor" here? lol, and some H production SCCA time and some ooooold Porsche stuff as a child...Then went F350 diesel for a long time. Now back to Chevy full circle...lots of new stuff to catch up on surely. I am a mechanic by trade but usually 7000 HP Caterpillar or there abouts.

Soooo, bring it on. What should I do about this converter...10" or 11" 2400 stall? What?

I did a 3.42 gear swap with a Yank 3200 stall on the wife's A4 a few years ago. Nice street combo. Here's my installation thread.

Think about a new GM Z06 rear and have 3:42's and then go with a 2800 -3200 stall converter

Keeping the 2:73s will certainly not help your acceleration a whole lot with the hi-stall. The engine still has to labor with the tall gears after the converter locks up. You can find a good set of used 3:42s(guys take them out of the stick shifts and install lower gears) for around $500. The difference is amazing. As recommended above 2800-3200 is the best bet for an almost stock engine. Have some one who knows what they are doing reprogram the tranny to reset the shift time, the shift points, the tranny pressure and the hi limit.

I went with 3.42 gears and a circle d 2800-3000 RPM 2B converter. I'm very happy with it but I'm going bigger when I get a cam

Tall ships in savannah was pretty cool.

Now to the question at hand.

My application is completely different than yours, however, here's my thoughts.

The converters of today are different than old school stuff.

I have a Yank 4000 with 3.42 gears in my car. I can drive through my neighborhood and never get about 1500rpm while rolling along about 20 mph or so. That's important to me. I don't want to totally annoy my neighbors.

However, when I hammer the gas, it really gets up and goes.

With out really knowing your goals, it's hard to recommend a converter, but like others have said here, somewhere around a 3000 stall would likely work out well for you.

Thanks Capt., I've taken advice and have opted for a JW 2800 stall with a stage 2 rebuild keeping pressures down and a good external cooler.

Thanks again everyone for all the feedback.
