I have seen some posts here on the forum where the owner did cut the shifter shaft to accommodate a different shift **** or to just have a shorter shifter. Here's some links:
I have not cut mine but did get a Hurst Style round shift **** which threaded farther down on the shifter shaft which IMO made a big difference. Maybe give this a try. Good luck.

I've been making custom shift ***** for my car for a few months now. With the wood *****, I can basically bury the shaft, forcing the boot way down. Works great for bar type *****, but I recently found a source for delrin and other types of ***** that I can make into *****. I'm limited to depth by the diameter of the ****. I really like the white delrin **** I have on there now, but I would love to lower it so it can hit the boot, since the piping is nearly the same color.
I just don't want to screw up anything.
Jack, thanks for the research, I'm going to those links now.

There may be more threads out there too. Just used the search function and typed in cutting stock shifter.
Thanks again Jack. Wish I thought of that terminology when I searched. Think I'll tackle that now.
No problem. The forum has a vast wealth of info just sitting out there.
Well guys, I cut a tad over 3/4" off, and here is the result. It's a little stiffer going into reverse but otherwise no significant effort adjustment, and it DOES shift 'shorter'. I like the change a lot.
