Guys, I am a new owner of a beautiful 2001 vert 6 speed. It is a blast to drive and I love it but being the former owner of a Honda s2000, which has what is probably the most precise and easiest shifting 6 speed on the planet.... I want to improve my C5 shifter.
Everything I read about the various shifters available says they are more precise but require MORE EFFORT! Frankly, my C5 is ok in the first 4 gears but putting it in 5th and 6th causes a strange little pain in my shoulder (I am not a weak man, 240 lbs. and 6' 2" but I am 64 years old). It seems to require too much lateral force to the right.
I have read about using a C6 Z06 shifter in the C5. Is that what I need? If so where do I find one? If not, is there a solution?
for the cost of the C6Z shifter you can't really beat it..that is what i am gonna go with..and i have driven a C5Z with the C6Z shifter and it does feel leaps and bounds better then the stock C5Z shifter..
Thanks, momo20 for your reply. Where would be the best place to find one of these shifters? As my name implies, I do metalwork and could easily modify this shifter for shorter throws, etc. but what I really need to know is whether it will take even more force than stock to get into 5th and 6th?
You could look at an MGW shifter with the longer handle. It still has a reduced shifter movement, but has the mechanical advantage of the longer handle. The shifters are absolute works of art!

Talk to Steve@RSD. He sells a lightly modified, but brand new C6Z shifter. He's a supporting vendor on here. My car had an MGW installed when I bought it, and the effort to shift was unreal. However, that may have been due to needing the shifter linkage aligned. The RSD Snap Shifter is like butter to shift though. I love it so far.
I'm sold on the C6Z06 shifter as well. Short throws and short handle best of both worlds for me. I no longer feel like I'm driving a truck as my arm never leaves the arm rest.

Being a former owner of a 350Z Roadster I understand what you are talking about. I switched to a C6 shifter and while it is no match for the 350Z shifter it is much better than the stock shifter. I just went to the C5 and C6 parts section and posted I wanted to buy one. In little time I had several offers. I bought the shifter with the C6 **** that came out of a car with 50 miles on it. Shipping and all was 90 bucks. I never had a problem with either shifter going from 4th to 5th. Just push the shifter as if it was a straight line from 4th to 5th and it goes right in 5th.
Guys, after posting this I posted for a used C6 Z06 shifter on the classifieds and then had second thoughts. After viewing MGW's installation video I found this:
It looks like a good price for the C6 shifter (but I don't know if it is Z06???) PLUS the new shifter box which the video highly recommends for older C5's. I think I will get this, put a C6 **** of some sort on it, do the anti-venom mod and see how it works. After that I may or may not get the MGW shifter.
That's a very tempting offer TheReaper! I am retired and would love an excuse to drive my 2001 vert over there!
As of right now I have the right door panel off and am waiting for the repaired door module to get back from Wisconsin (I tried this guy and will let everyone know if it worked out OK:
Anyway I would really like to try out your Snap Shifter as that is also one I was thinking about. I will PM you you for possible times if you are serious.
Yes sir, I was serious. My offer was made because the RSD comes with a new shifter box and it made a difference in my car. With 95k miles on my car it seemed like a good idea. And, if you're interested I could sell you a MGW with C6 **** cheap. It would be next weekend before I could do anything though. I work nights.
I did not notice that the RSD included the box. I could probably buy the shifter and box and cut & weld the shaft shorter and to accept the C5 **** but at the price they are asking, the RSD sounds like a winner.... I might come over next Sun. afternoon if you are available Mr Reaper!
