Costco giving members free nitrogen replacement fill in tires?
I read this on one of the other forums I monitor. This sounds very sweet.
For those of us that went all 4 on the Eagle GS F1-D3, this sounds very sweet. I might just give it a shot.
ripped:

Just replaced 2 of my tires @ Costco and they handed me a flyer: "We take tire safety to the next level with... NITROGEN Tire Inflation"
Basicly, they will inflate your tires with dry Nitrogen!
More info on Nitrogen tire inflation
PLUS: at the bottom of the flyer, it stated "In fact, we'll inflate any Costco member's tire with NITROGEN, no matter where the tires were purchased"
Edited: They changed my valve caps from the old black one to the green (alien green stuff), has a N on it! Cool but it look weird on my alloy wheel with black tire! Take your valve caps off if you don't want to loose it!

Normal "free" air is 78% nitrogen. I guess it is that 21% oxygen we don't want.

I am thinking helium might be better, you can reduce your unsprung weight, must be good for .1 to .2 in the 1/4

The primary reason to go with pure nitrogen is that it does not experience the same level of pressure change when heated. As most are aware (and you can witness this on your D.I.C.'s), the static pressure in your tires elevate from the heat / friction generated while driving. And the harder you drive, the greater the pressure increase (up to a point). So you could argue that setting the optimum pressure with nitrogen and having it stay consistent could be viewed as a "safety enhancement". The whole deal with filling the tires w/ nitrogen (for cars and bikes, anyway) comes from the race track, where its properties are more fully appreciated.

I doubt that the average guy would notice any difference though

Well my friend who is the Assistant MGR. of Costco up here has no idea about this, he even call (2) California stores and (1) Washington store and they didn’t know anything!

Personally, I think it's a gimmick, but if you can get it for free, go for it.

First caskets, now nitrogen in the tires. Costco is really going all out, huh!

Possibly, I can see using DRY air in a car tire. One cubic meter of saturated HUMID air holds about 50 grams (same weight as 10 nickels) of water at 100 degrees F. I estimate a typical car tire has enough air to hold maybe 10 grams water. If that condenses and freezes in winter, might it be enough to make a cold tire out-of-balance?
But use nitrogen in a street tire? Sounds like a marketing ploy to me.

I bet SAM'S CLUBS will soon be offering free air-change for tires. Everyone needs to have the summer air changed to winter air so that it doesn't freeze!
