I have 160k on the clock and I don't think she is running as strong or maybe the ole gray mare just isn't as strong as she used to be. I have no known mechanical failure, no codes, no smoking, no check engine lights, etc.
I do have Vararam, Superman longtubes and exhaust, LS6 intake, just basic bolt on stuff.
I was considering a Cam install but again with a 12 year old engine with 160k miles, I don't think that would be best way to go.
Rebuilding the engine, what should I consider? I'm not shooting for 500 horses or anything like that and I'm more of a waxer and not a racer; but admittedly I would like a little more SOTP feeling and to avert any future engine failure due to age and mileage.
Are you doing the rebuild yourself? If not, the hardest part will be finding a shop that you can trust and HAS the KNOW HOW to do it right. Other than that you have a whole host of companies that offer short blocks built for whatever goals you have in mind. I would recommend a short block and install a cam for your desires. That way you rest easy at night and can expect years of service from a new engine. Installing a cam or other upgrades on a 160K short block would be risky at best.
Good luck.....best wishes.....and have a blast with the new power afterwards!
My first response would be " If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It". If the car is running fine just lacking the additional power you want, dirve it till it dies. The other side says, you can never have enough power. Research the forum vendors, there are several that sell 383 stroker short and long block assemblies at reasonable prices. It would be a great combination with your existing mods and not break the bank.
