Okay, so I read through all the posts I can find on here with the intermittent wiper operation problems. Here is my story so far.
On Friday, we had heavy heavy rain in the NY metro area. My car sat out in the rain at work all day. Got in the car after work and halfway home, my wipers started going and the switch was off. They finally stopped parked halfway between up and down. I tried to turn them on to get them moving and they wouldnt move at all, with the switch in every position.
Friday evening, I get on the forum here and read about the utters. Saturday morning, I go outside and clean the utters out. They were completely clogged. I took them out off the car, cleaned them up and sprayed them out and then ran some water trough the windshield and it nows drains down very nicely.
However, I still have no control of my wipers. They do however randomly come on from time to time.
My car is a 97 C5. I pulled the cover off and looked at the motor and eveything under there seems clean. I dont see to much debris or anything but I didnt pul the wipers off and clean see what was in the connectors.
My question is this, do I need to get a new motor? I assume no, because the wipers come on and off from time to time, indicating the motor is okay. The fuse on the motor (fuse 10 in the passenger footwell fuse box) is not blown either.
Can someone explain how the wiper system work? I assume the switch on the stalk actually sends a signal back to the BCM and the BCM then energizes a relay of some sort in order to power the motor. I'd like to try and check the easy stuff before going out and buying a new motor.
Also in one of the other threads there is refernce made to a wiper control board. What does this do and what is its relation to the BCM?
Thanks in advance for any help. Trying to figure out what my next steps are here. This is a huge PITA because I need to drive the car tomorrow and its supposed to rain.
I replaced my 98 wiper motor October 2011, It just crapped out again, starts running and I can't stop it. Is the control circuit board inside the motor area? The motor replacement isn't too tough.
Yeah, the printed circuit board is inside the motor. Mine was actually wet inside when I took it apart. I also cut the bottom of the utters off to help them drain easier.
Rock Auto has remanufactured ones for $50. I don't know about getting just the circuit board. I've found cracked soldier joints in GM wiper circuit boards that were repairable.

Ok i know i.m late here but i think my experience will be the same of many people not only with c5's ...when i got my c5 wiper motor was bad...after replace it ..only work good before a heavy rain shower...i decided to join to this forum looking for answers foe my problem...wiper motor its new..fuse is new...the other thing could be switch..i replaced the switch...works perfect ...one more time after a heavy shower..bingoooo f..... wipers working in off position...what a f....?? I found a personal answer of junkman a popular guy here in this forum..he said ur utters are clogged. ...ok today i took out the plastic cover ...and checked the utters ..aleluya junkman was right utters were full of bugs leaves puddle and a lot of nasty things i never tought this could be the cause...i cut the bottom of the utters and thats it so i recommend to get a new wiper motor yours could look nice but from inside it is all wet ...a new one remanufactured cost 50..maybe 55 if you give your old one..so my advice is get a new wiper motor ...good luck regards from miami
Is it possible to just change the circuit board? That would be cheaper than replacing the whole motor assembly.
i had the same problem with my c5 udders were full of trash I cut the bottom of them my advice is get a new wiper motor advance auto parts, autozone ,,they have it for no more that 70 if you don't let them your old motor so if you give your bad wiper motor the new one will only cost 50..maybe 55 no more ,,,I would like people that happen this they live here in Miami to help them just for enjoy to put my hands in a c5 no for money,,,good luck
Check if debris has been sucked through the grate at the top of your hood and has clogged up the rubber collection pouches underneath.
The rubber pouches (2 of them) will be dangling where the red circle is above. They have slits on the bottom that are supposed to release any debris but they often get clogged up. I found a tons of leaves clogging mine after my friend taught me about this. He learned the hard way and those things being clogged up (supposedly) caused his wipers to go haywire and eventually burn out completely.
I removed the motor and the area below and the 3 utters were all clean and dry. I replaced the motor but the new motor does the same thing. It runs in both low and high and will not shut off (i tested both without the wipers attached to the mechanism). The intermittent and off positions on the right steering column stalk don't have any affect on the motor, it just keeps running. I guess I need to change the wiper switch on the steering column.? What else could it be?

My replacement Autozone new Cardone motor is now doing the same...won't reverse to grab the catch to shut off.
Just ordered new GM motor and wiper switch less than $300 on Amazon...bringing back the Autozone crap.
I know I'm just throwing parts at it but for $300 hopefully this is it, too much frustration swapping out units....
