I have driven a 2000 Vert with a 3:15 performance rear for about 4 years now. Car has always run and performed very well. I purchased the car with 47,000 miles and today it has 60,400 miles on it. I took a trip with it over the weekend to my brother's, about a 300 mile round trip. Car ran perfect and was a joy to drive on highways in The Poconos of PA. Upon returning home, I noticed a spot of fluid in the driveway. Today, in the garage, I looked underneath rear of car and another spot of fluid exists right under where trans/rear assembly is. Fluid appears to be clear in color. What is most plausible cause of this leak? Can I tighten any seals to see if that will stop leak?
May not be a gasket at all. Especially since you noticed the situation after a trip. The differential vents on the C5 can be problematic. I might start by checking that the diff is not over filled. Then proceed to the vent which is directly above the drivers side half shaft attachment point. Get your hand up there and see if there is fluid around the vent.
Here is a thread from last year that addresses the vent issue:
This may be my problem. It started on the HRPT this year and there was some, well, pretty spirited driving taking place.
I didn't jack the car up but I did crawl underneath and looked around.
What I found was a diff, that looked soaked in grime. Not what I would expect from a seal on the left hand side, but what I would suspect a leak coming from the top and draining down. The whole diff, on the backside is soaked and even going over to the right side. I don't see how a seal on the left could cause this, but I won't know for sure until I get the car jacked up.
This will be a little bit as I am recovering from a scope on my knee. But when I take a look I will post my findings.
