I have a glass top for my Vette and while I do like it I want to get a body color top for those hot summer days. My interior is all black and with the glass top it's like an oven on a hot day. I have a mini cover which I use but it's kind of a pain to put on and take off. Plus it's nice to have both tops.
So the question is where to get one? My car is Magnetic Red.
Keep your eyes on the C5 parts section if you don't already. I got lucky and found a Lemans blue to match my car for $350 with just one small scratch and weather stripping like new a few years ago. The member selling it lived 10 minutes from my in laws so they brought it up for me. Probably won't get that lucky, but I've seen them for sale continually on there. As I think back to that find maybe it offsets some of the pain I had last week and the repair bill I will have.
I will be selling mine soon it is in primer now. Where are you located?
Delaware.
Unpainted might not be a bad idea. That way I can get it painted the color I want. Might do Mag Red or black, haven't decided yet. With it unpainted my options are endless.
What you want to do makes good sense, economically speaking as well as being practical. When I started looking for my C5, the two-top option was very high on my list for the same reasons you give as it can add up to $500 to the value of the car. My clear (smoked) top hangs on the garage wall most of the time but it is there if I ever feel like using it. What I usually do is take the painted top off and put it in the back until I get where I want to go or the wind and noise gets to be tiring. Then I just put it back on and I have the quiet GT car for eating up the miles.
I did the same as you are trying to do for my last C4, but painting was required.
If you find a top you can paint it yourself for not much money. I got the exact color match for my 2000 magnetic red vet at http://www.automotivetouchup.com/. I believe I spent about $45 for paint and supplies. After a few months of looking I got lucky and found a top on Ebay for under $300. I spent about a hour getting the top sanded and taped off. Painting took 2 days 1 for color and 1 for the clear coat. I ordered 2 cans of magnetic red to be sure I had enough. The clear coat you can find cheaper at most auto part stores. Make sure you do get the right paint #, GM changed the paint in 2000 on Magnetic Red.
