Change it now. If you do not, you may start hearing strange noises from the back of your vette. It will sound like it is a bad bearing especially in a tight turn. That noise is the limited slip clutches in need of LIMITED SLIP FLUID. I changed mine and replaced the diff lubricant with Mobile 1 lub that has the limited slip fluid already mixed in.
Where is the differential drain plug on a 96? Also is it better to use lube with posi additive in it , or buy a synthetic gear lube and use the GM posi additive.
I couldn't find any mention of changing oil. I only saw checking the level. That's the reason for this post.
I would just change it and be done with it. The type of driving dictates much of the "necessary" maintenance required that has no "real" mention in the service manual.
I changed the diff fluid in my 02 Z06 at something like 800 miles and now change it about every 8 track days or so. But, mine has been mostly a track car from the start. In what was my daily driver from 06-09, a 2006 CTS-V which essentially a C6 drivetrain (LS2 engine), I changed the diff fluid at 10k miles: 2006 Cadillac CTS-V Used Oil Analysis Factory Fill Differential Fluid

This fluid has friciton modifier already in it and extra is not needed for the C5/C5 Z06. [/QUOTE]
****, I just changed my gear oil yesterday with the Amsoil. I knew it had the modifier in it already but i put a 1/2 bottle of the GM additive just in case so the clutches wouldn't chatter. I guess I'll have to romp on it and make sure im still using both tires.
