Owner of 03 coupe with 24000 miles. Need advice on ebcm.
Since you can still purchase them new should I get one as
insurance? I plan on keeping the car until I expire or
cant get in anymore which ever comes first
I'd like to know this as well, And since most or all, (I'm assuming) have to have a VIN when ordering, this is a part you might need and find it's gone out of stock or out of production for good ?
The '01 and later C5 EBCM's can be repaired. I have heard good reports from one of the Forum venders - ABSFixer and others have made repairs on their own EBCM. If I experienced problems that I couldn't repair by checking grounds and connections, I would send it to ABSFixer. I believe the cost is in the $200 range (+/- $50) which is a lot better deal than buying a new one from GM.

yes, start now while the costs are acceptable...if you ever do sell the car way in the future who knows what will happen? I plan to sweeten the sale by giving the parts to the buyer.... a lot better way to go than having to part out because the car can't be fixed cheaply. I just saw a post stating the rocker panels are no longer supplied by GM...add that to the growing list of unavailable parts. Also, the parts you stockpile have the potential to grow in value as time goes by, so your investment in them gives you peace of mind and a possible profit.
this post reminds me why i sold my c4 many years ago. in 2006 gm liquidated all the remaining c4 parts due to their asinine 10yr rule. the c5 is due to have that happen in 2014. i would expect to see a LOT of parts hit the market in 2014, some really great deals for a few months and then....the supply will start shrinking after the vendors buy everything up. prices will stabilize and inventory will get depleted.
as most of you know the vast majority of c4 parts are now found off donor cars. things as silly as bumper skid plates are near impossible to find new.
it would appear that the c5, while being a much better car, is headed the same way
I thought about this for quite awhile myself, my ebcm had been throwing the 1214 code intermittently for for years. I would get it 3 or 4 times each driving season and was always able to clear it. This year I finally decided to send it to absfixer for the repair. The reason I didn't go for a new one is the repair was cheaper and also seemed to be a more reliable fix. I had no faith in the new part, I figured it would develop the same issue over time.
It's not GM's rule-the feds mandate they only have to stock parts for 10yrs. All the other companies do about the same.
it's absolutely GM's rule. as you just said, it's the minimum of the law { i think the real min is 7 but don't quote me}. many other companies do not do the same.
for example, i can walk into acura and buy ANY part for a 1994 integra or nsx. how about toyota? mkiv supra has support. how about honda? same deal
it really IS just GM and in some cases ford & chrysler . a lot of other companies support a car as long as it is popular
lastly, i could understand if they want to stop making plastic clips and the like but not having an EBCM for the 97-00 cars is just not something you do to win customers over the long run.
And I can go into a Chevy dealer and get stuff for C3's too. When a piece of electronics NOT made by the manufacturer hit's that 10 yr mark, most dealers will not have it. And I'll bet you can't get ANY part for a 94 Acura, espcially the electronics, and when you can, it will make the price of an EBCM seem trivial.
I've had/have BMW motorcycles in the past and getting parts for the OLD bikes is always easier than the newer bikes. You can't expect them to stock parts forever for everything they have ever built-it's not realistic, especially if they do not manufacture it.
actually all the electronics are stocked at acura. that's ecu's abs modulators, power window switches, all of it. some of these parts are kind of crazy with the prices though. an engine wiring harness for a type r is $996 for example. the nsx is even worse, BUT, they at least have the option
not sure where your dealer with the c3 parts is. most of the c4 parts have been discontinued and are in extremely short supply let alone the c3. the C3 is catered to by the aftermarket and the c4 is catered to by the wrecking yard
