At work and not much time to search for this answer...
Car is in shop to check out a leaking tire. Turns out it the problem is with the bead. I'll skip the details and just say the tire has to be replaced. The tire tread is at 7/32 and brand new the tread is 10/32. The tires are only about 6 months old and maybe have 3000 miles on them.
The shop tells me the threshold for only replacing one tire is when the tread depth is only off by no more than 3/32, which is where I'm at.
Should I replace both rear tires? I don't race or track. Just mostly driving to work each day, very little hwy driving, and some spirited driving. 2004 convertible. Michelin 285/35/19 Pilot AS Plus ZP.
Again, thanks so much for all the replies. I've decided to just go with the one tire. I'll just do a few righthanded parking lot donuts to even out the tread on the new tire. ;-)
