I made this iPod mount for my 2001 vert a few days ago and so far I like it a lot. As you can see from the photos I already have an XM radio so the more conventional location for the iPod was taken. I wanted to be able to see the screen and operate the buttons (I have the PXDP PXHGM4 unit and it doesn't seem to allow you to change albums or artists from the radio) while keeping the iPod out of my way.
I work with metal so it was an easy task to fabricate a piece that mounts under the left mounting bolt underneath the A/H button panel. This piece easily slides under the left side of the console plastic and has two tapped holes that allow the actual mount to screw to it. I used 1/2" by 1/8" flat bar (thinner material for under the mounting nut) and 1 1/4" by 1/8" plate for the iPod mounting surface (I used velcro to actually fasten the iPod to the plate). Finally I powder coated it with matte black using the Harbor Freight powder coating unit.
I just thought someone might get some ideas from my post.
Nice, tell me about your XM mount. I am looking at an Onyx that has the powerconnect mount and I am trying to figure out the bes way to mount it so I can be used in both my C5 and the Z.
This is the mount I am using for the XM, I only used the basic mount, I didn't use the specific Device Holder, I just made the mount work with my XM by drilling a couple of holes in it:
Very nice, my mp3 player stays in the shift boot most of the time. I can not see the face or the buttons while driving.
You have come up with a very good mount.
That's pretty clever, Road Runner. I didn't realize you could mount the a/c controls where the ashtray goes.
I saw picture of this mod on the Forum and a few years ago I realized that I never use the ashtray or lighter. To do this you have to remove the ashtray mounting bracket and reroute the wiring for the lighter. I decided to install seat heaters so I used the lighter circuit to power them. I like the setup - it's out of the way. Sometime in the future I will be mounting a few other switches and will finish the plate on the ipod.
