Just took my 2001 Z06 in for dyno and tuning session, my tuner said the car was locked from the last guy who tuned it, and that he could not unlock it. Anyone have any insight on this subject?
Thanks for the advice, I just purchased car about 3 months ago, it runs great, just wanted to get it dynoed and check overall tune, I believe it is running rich, but yea it doesn't make much sense to lock the tune. It's not as if there is somekind of secret tune this guy put on it. I am new to forum as well, but have enjoyed my time on here already, and I am loving the car as well.
I bought the car out of Austin, TX. Don't know who tuner was, I am in TN, and my car is at a well recommended shop, guy says the only way to unlock it is get code from whoever tuned it, replace ECU or try and reflash ECU which could cause it to crash as well.
My tuner said he could reset ecu to stock and then do a tune but he only thinks he could get maybe 20 hp. Is this worth it considering the tune on there now is not horrible

Well you said you think it's running rich. Why did you think that in the first place - does the exhaust smell like fuel? What are your current mods?
Yes my tuner showed fuel ratings it's rich up top. I was smelling fuel and black residue on tailpipes. This car had intake exhaust kooks lt headers cam? Valve springs and retainers supposedly he just dynoed it at 380 rwhp I was told it to be like 425. Does these numbers support mods. Car runs great, but I was expecting little better hp numbers though.

Since running rich is safer than running lean, it's a fairly common practice for a tuner that doesn't really know what he's doing to just throw in a lot of fuel at high rpm.
At 380rwhp, your car must have the stock cam. Otherwise, it definitely has a crappy tune.
If you know and trust your new tuner, I would definitely get it re-tuned from scratch. In fact I was in a similar position myself, and after a proper re-tune, my car ran smoother and was noticeably stronger at low and mid RPM. To me, it was clearly money well spent.
Thanks for advice definitely has cams not sure how much my guy is a great ls mechanic and tuner so I think I will let him put on dyno and retune. What should hp be with my mods. I just wish ecu wasn't locked

Do you know the cam specs? Typical rwhp for your mods seems to be the 410-430 range, depending on the cam and dyno.
Don't know specs prolly not too aggressive but def not stock has pretty good lope but still streetable little jerky in first in traffic or something like that. Preciate the advice, I thought something wasn't right cause my buddy has same car with tune intake b&b exhaust and our cars are neck and neck. I accused him of having a 75 shot hidden in car somewhere. Lol.
It was probably tuned at Nelson performance in San Antonio. He is the only one close to the Austin area that locks the ecu. You can call them and tell them who you bought the car from and see if they tuned it. I so you can pull the ecu out and mail it to them and they will put the stock tune on it an unlock it. Other than that you will need to replace it. Nelson had a lot of pissed off customers because of this. They don't tell you they are going to lock the ecu so the seller may not have known. It's a way for a tuner to have return business I guess.
