Was headed to the tuner today to get a street tune so I can break in my new motor and then all of a sudden. Bam!
2 and 4 are a no go. Push the clutch in shift to second and grinding gears is what is heard and the same for 4th. It goes into 1-3-5-6 just as easy as can be. So I turned around and headed home and got it to go into 4th one time but that was it.
a few things can cause grinding other than just failed/worn syncros. the t56 has a ton of small parts. first thing i would do is make sure the shifter is aligned. use the netrual lock pin and make sure its perfect, then go from there..

That will be my first start to troubleshoot the problem. but I find it weird that it is only 2/4 and none of the other gears. which in turn why I say synchros compared to thinking its the linkage or shifter itself.
does it make any odd noises using the clutch or changing other gears? any odd vibrations?
my 2nd and 4th started acting up and it ended up being the toruqe tube, driveshaft was shot.
That's what I'm thinking. Can you pre-shift and then get into 2nd or 4th okay? For example, first go into third and then is going into second okay? My trans went out and I had to do this trick to get into 1st and 2nd gears (those were my grinding gears).
I had a similar problem but with gears 1 and 3 a few weeks ago...half the folks came on saying my trany was done...some cooler heads said to check the linkage and look at adjusting the shifter
a few days before I had the shifter out and when I put it back in I put it about two milimeters further backward than it should be, it did'nt become a problem until I drove the car hard a few days later and got everything up to high operating temperatures....when the arts all expanded from the heat that two milimeters off was enough to make the car not seat into those forward gears properly....simply adjust the shift box a few millimeters fixed the problem instead of $2000 on a new tranny
I'm not trans expert, but the thing that convinced me to look for something other than destroyed synchros was the persistant thought that it seemed unlikely that two synchros on the same side of the shift box would both go bad at once with none of the common warning signs like gear grinding or odd noises
Will have more information tomorrow but I am not quite reading if there is a unique position that it should be placed it. But I am sure I will be able to tell tomorrow once we open the console up
Finally got things figured out. both of the bolts on the shifter box bracket were loose. Aligned them up drove and adjusted and locked them down. Shifts like new.
