Good evening all, Fairly new to the forum and wondering if a C6 shifter will fit in a C5 without any modifications. and possibly if there is really any benifit to this application. Please advise thanks in advance
Finally....something I have real experience with on vettes.
I recently bought an 01Z and was told it had a c6z shifter box and shifter that had been shortened and threaded to accept a c5 ****.
All the above info turned out to be true but I couldn't have been more disappointed with the shifter. I didn't have a stock c5 to compare it with but I can tell you first hand that I missed 3rd in everyday driving several times. That is something I hardly ever did with my f-bodies. The issue was that the stock shifter wouldn't spring to center when in neutral helping you find 3rd easier.
I replaced it with the Hurst shifter seen in the write up posted. I can't tell you how much I love this purchase. I haven't missed 3rd yet let alone any other gear. It is nearly a 40% shorter throw and a very positive feel for each gear.
I have seen a couple of vendors that have a boot for that purpose, and have seen a seller or 2 say that the boot needed to be altered or replaced. Good to know that is not the case.

Interesting. I had exactly the opposite experience. I went from the stock C5 shifter in my Z to a shortened C6Z shifter (and box) with the C6Z ****. It was a night and day 1000% improvement! The C5 shifter was loose, sloppy and had long throws. My C6Z shifter has positive engagement and centering force without being too stiff, and I can find all gears perfectly every time. Some people *grip* the **** when they are shifting and that's totally wrong... I've learned to gently push the shifter from 2nd to 3rd, forward motion only, and I can find the gear like butter. Someone did a great writeup with pics on how to shift properly...I don't have the link but it really made a difference. Anyway, glad you like the Hurst! Definitely an improvement over stock as well!

A number of C5 owners have put the C6 shifter in their car and love it. It will fit just fine, but before you buy you might want to do some searches here on the forum on aftermarket shifters - there are a number out there that seem to be very good.
I have owned several C5s and C6s over the years. I have to say that the OE C5 shifter was awful!
Prior to the C6 the main mod options were:
B&M Ripper
Hurst
Kirban
I recently purchased an '03 Z06 and one of the first things I did was find a new shifter. I decided to try out the OE C6 shifter.
The OE C6 shifter is a vast improvement over the OE C5 shifter while retaining similar OE quality, fit, and finish. It does a good job of dampening vibration unlike the after market shifters mentioned above.
Can you explain? I had to open up the neck of the boot when I did mine.
Search funtion doesn't appear to be working at this time.
But if you were to do a search of the RSD Snap Shifter posts.... There is one in regards to making the boot shorter in length to better fit the shorter & angled C6 shifter.
Basically you fold the upper sectionof the boot inwards & zip tie the extra material/boot (inside) to the shifters shaft.
Hope this makes sense.
Worked real well for me when I have the RSD installed.
At the present time I have my Hurst in there.
For the record, I was able to install my c6 shifter into my c5 and use my c5 **** (b/c it was rethreadd) and did not have to modify my shifter boot at all.

My .02
2nd to 3rd is silky smooth for me. Most excellent upgrade! I did get a new boot from MAM which I still had to modify a little, but easy!
