Even though I am a senior member here ( how'd that happen?) I am still pretty ignorant about a lot of stuff on my 2001 vert. When I got new tires the other day they told me I was missing one of the plastic gray nut caps on my polished aluminum stock wheels. I tried to buy a new one but the color was so far off (fading probably) that having a missing was not much worse.

I do not have locking lugs on mine and have never had a problem. However, for the price of the locking lugs, the security could be a nice peace of mind for you.
I put this same set from Zip Corvette onto my '99 convertible in place of the original nuts/plastic covers. I have the magnesium wheels and these look much better than the cheapo plastic caps.
I went without lock nuts - they pretty much make it inconvenient for you or your mechanic and are virtually no obstacle at all for thieves. I've replaced them on all my cars.
K9Leader Red cars are faster. They did a study on it.
I got a set of chrome plastic covers from Summit Racing that work perfect. I like the factory setup since I don't have to worry about chipping or marking the lugs. My lock key as missing but i got another set with key from a forum member for cheap. Just another option.
You can use any make or type of nuts you like as long as they have the correct GM chamfer and are the right size. I would also recommend ditching the locking nut in your case. I doubt anyone is interested in C5 Oem wheels these days. And, good luck to them trying to fit a conventional jack under there to get the wheels off.
