Default Wheel nuts

Even though I am a senior member here ( how'd that happen?) I am still pretty ignorant about a lot of stuff on my 2001 vert. When I got new tires the other day they told me I was missing one of the plastic gray nut caps on my polished aluminum stock wheels. I tried to buy a new one but the color was so far off (fading probably) that having a missing was not much worse.

My question: Can I just replace my plastic caps and wheel nuts (including the wheel lock one) with something like this: http://www.zip-corvette.com/ProductD...L2-SR&CTitle=&

I am not particularly sold on these I am just asking the question.

Yes you can. Just make sure the chamfer is correct on the nuts.

What's the thoughts on whether I should ditch the lock nut? I have a garage and only rarely take my car on an overnight trip.

Gorrilla locking lug nuts will match up to the chromies that you are proposing to buy.

I'd rather have the security & peace of mind, with the locks in place.

I do not have locking lugs on mine and have never had a problem. However, for the price of the locking lugs, the security could be a nice peace of mind for you.

No problem swapping these out one at a time with wheels on the ground, right?

I put this same set from Zip Corvette onto my '99 convertible in place of the original nuts/plastic covers. I have the magnesium wheels and these look much better than the cheapo plastic caps.

I went without lock nuts - they pretty much make it inconvenient for you or your mechanic and are virtually no obstacle at all for thieves. I've replaced them on all my cars.

I got a set of chrome plastic covers from Summit Racing that work perfect. I like the factory setup since I don't have to worry about chipping or marking the lugs. My lock key as missing but i got another set with key from a forum member for cheap. Just another option.

Good point, S'noJob. I realize that. I think the danger of losing your key is about 1000 times higher than having your wheels stolen!

You can use any make or type of nuts you like as long as they have the correct GM chamfer and are the right size. I would also recommend ditching the locking nut in your case. I doubt anyone is interested in C5 Oem wheels these days. And, good luck to them trying to fit a conventional jack under there to get the wheels off.

From one who feels like he's lost his keys about 1000 times, I couldn't agree more!!
