Your insurance company is steering you in that direction to save some bucks, as a reglassed one is cheaper than from GM. I'm not sure you can get the complete panels from GM anymore, but a good source to check with would be Gene at gmpartshouse.com. Obviously you can try and find one from another owner and sometimes you can get a good deal on them (but shipping will be the issue).
I know Mid-America (and perhaps other vendors) offer a replacement service where you buy their reglassed top (made from acrylic) and then send in a good frame core - cost after core refund comes to about $900 or so plus shipping.
I've not heard of anyone getting the reglassed top so hard to say anything about the quality. My choices here in order of preferences would be (1) GM factory new (if available), (2) take the check and buy a used one in mint condition (if you can find one at a reasonable price) and (3) a reglassed one. I'm not knocking the reglassed one, I just don't have any feedback to go on as to the quality of that piece.
Good luck - perhaps another forum member has bought a reglassed one and can give you some insight into its quality.
^ yeah to both the above, thanks, i just called sf and said refurb is a deal breaker, cut me a check. They arer callin the shop to "get to the bottom of this" ,
