To the OP: Every car I've had (about 22) I've had someone try to race me. Most of the time I know I'd win just because of my driving ability, so I'm not tempted to even try. But now with the Vette, I find myself just not caring. I know I can win, I don't have to prove it, and I'm not going to be "that guy" on uTube crashing his vette while racing some kid who messes up and causes the whole thing.
However, a post on here made me want to tell my story. My grandpa, who is also my hero, retired from being a fire fighter when I was young. When I bought my Vette, he wanted a ride in it.
We were cruising along with the top down, and he was just loving the experience. I hadn't put the pedal down, didn't need to. I was on the highway close to my house when a Honda Civic Si came up beside me. Huge wheels, big exhaust out the back, intercooler piping sticking out in front where the bumper should have been. They did a pop-off, allowing the WG to "whoosh". The punk in the driver's side had his hat on sideways, the passenger had a video camera pointed across his friend's face at me.
I shook my head "no", but my grandpa was like "You going to take that from them? Put those punks in their place, looks like they need it." Enough said...
At 45 I dropped to 2nd, looked over, smiled, waved at the camera, and as I heard them hit the gas, I just took off. My grandpa's face was covered in the biggest grin I'd ever seen as we blasted up to xxx speeds. The Civic was far behind. I didn't let up. It was just one of those times when the feeling was too great.
I'm sure the Civic was waiting for us to let up so they could "fly by", but it never happened. We came to the stop light 2 miles down the road, and the Civic popped and rattled to a stop, but wouldn't come up beside us. I unbuckled and put my head out the top, and yelled back at them, "Hey make sure to post THAT video up to uTube, I want to see just how bad it looked from your angle!" I got flipped off, and my grandpa was laughing.
One of those memories I will treasure for life. I love my grandpa, God bless him.
I had a small kia suv get beside me at a light this evening. They revved the motor at me. I looked over at them like are you serious?? The light turns green and I take off as I would normally and I could hear their tires spinning trying to keep up with me and I was still taking off faster than them.... Probably the slowest car I have ever seen in my life. But was pretty funny.
I think most people do that hoping desperately that you will give them a little speed display so that they might live vicariously thru you......cause they wish they had one too!!!! (I'm not above obliging them if I think I can get away with it!)

Every day. They're relentless but mostly, I just keep them on ignore. The ones that **** me off, though, are the tailgaters. A-holes.
--Wag--
I had a hemmorrhoid (Whatelse could you call him he was right on my A--) at 4am that I had enough of, so rather then get a ticket from a Cop who most mornings is sitting on the side of the road playing cards on his Laptop. (Yes I've seen the screen many times) I went the longer route to get rid of him.
Wags I'm with ya I can't leave the driveway without at least one person doing the stuff I ranted about. When my son took the 98 out for the first time he cameback a FEW HOURS later he said "Do you get (Insert my rant) ?" Then he told me all the stories.
Most are just trying to do a "drive around" to check the car out. I get this everyday and on the occasion that some will want to tease at the red light, I ignore most of them. The cam and roll bar kinda attract attention so it's more like waving a red flag in front of a cow(I know it's really a bull) but we're talking about trucks and beaters impersonating (bulls). When I get the serious jerks asking for a demo...I just say I can't afford the tires unless they are willing to front the cost.
Sounds like the BMW 3 series crowd....what is it they think they have to prove....
Yep People with Beamers and Lexus seem to either stare at me or give dirty looks. Had one guy on the freeway yesterday in a BMW roll down the window as he is passing me and make some kind of hand gesture that I really didn't understand. Oh and yes the wonderful tailgaters...
Just love this, there is nothing in the world like having a Vette tripping down the highway listening to the Bose and watching all the young gunns with dad car trying to make a scene but they just can't kill the beast !!!! yessssss
Your thread and question compelled me to relate a true story that involves a recently deceased relative and my Vette:
My friend and my Aunt, Libby Kirtley, then age 81, were cruising in my Vette, Targa off in the the spring of 2011. On a nondivided 4 lane south of my town a couple of young guns in a late 70's model Chevy pickup with some obvious engine/exhaust upgrades? cruised up along side. I was in the left lane, the guns were in the right. As they pulled alongside the driver yelled,,"On Three".
I heard him and looked over and grinned and yelled back while pointing at Libby said, " Not now"!
Libby never missed a beat. She looked up at me and said, and I quote, "BLOW HIS FING DOORS OFF"!
So, what could I do? YEP!
Libby loved cruising in my car, I miss her. Passed away 6/15/12
Cool story. Those Okie chicks are the bestest ever!!! My condolences on your loss of a very cool woman!!

I turned down a twisty road today. I noticed a nice new 5.0 mustang sitting there about to turn as well. There was about 3 guys in the car and he reved his engine when i went by. Sounded mean btw.. I knew it was going to be interesting... So I look back in the rear view and see him sit there for a few seconds giving me some distance. Then he takes off and starts to catch up on me quick. This road has like a speed limit of 20 all the way through and some sharp turns in a 3 mile back road. So the cars in front of me were driving pretty spirited as do I most of the time. Nothing too crazy, about 40-45ish in the turns. I noticed that this mustang wanted to play so bad. It seemed like in every turn he was nailing the gas sending the rear of the car outward but the guy looked like he was handling the car well and was try to keep his distance away from me when he was doing that. Not sure what exhaust he had but that thing has a nice loud growl. I could hear his exhaust over mine and he was about 100 feet behind me... And my car is pretty loud with borla stingers. I kept my cool while he was doing all this behind me. I just know he was expecting me to drift through the turns as well. I dont feel like buying new tires next week.

I've not had anyone try goading me on in the Vette. Got plenty of that in previous cars though. One was a pretty stout sleeper that completely embarrassed a guy and his girl in a Ford Probe GT. It took 3 tries of them pointing and laughing before I finally gave in, dropped to 3rd gear and motioned to them to "go for it". It was sad, I probably had him by 300 hp and one less passenger. Needless to say, it was tough to tell if it was just me hitting the throttle or if he also hit the brakes

Sadly, those stangs that sound so nice also make that noise in the cabin. I test drove one and could not believe the interior noise. Then I found out Ford actually pipes that noise INTO the car. If they had an option to make the car quiet inside, I'd consider buying a stang.
It may have something to do with the TYPE of Vette you drive!
There might be something to that
I don't get near as many doofuses/showoffs/challenges with the '03 A/E Vert as I did with the Torch Red '97 coupe.
Around here it's more likely a jacked up Toyota Pickup with tires so big he can't even drive it in 5th gear, or an F150 thinking noise = horsepower.
