Car owners insurance covers the car. It works both ways. If the dealer wrecks your car during "test drive" your insurance goes with the car.

When I was in college I had a good friend that enjoyed testing driving sports cars on the weekend. I knew he drove like maniac so I never tagged along with him. He sent a 82 vette into a drainage ditch.

Default Dealership stories...

Ok I have to tell this one, since it's almost on subject.

I went to the county fair, saw the Dodge dealership tent with a nice red 2007 Dodge Ram Big Horn with the new 6.7L turbo diesel. I want it. Wife wants it. We end up setting an appointment to go to the dealership.

The truck is inside, on the showroom floor when we get there. We sit down to do the paper work and the sales gal tells us she will go out and fill it up. I start reading the paper work we are about to sign, when I hear a screech. I look up, and see the passenger's side of my truck against the rail of the roll up door.

I stand up, and as I yell "No, Stop!!" She continues, taking out the entire side of my... rather their truck from the rear passenger's door back.

You may imagine me, in slow motion, yelling no, with my voice sounding really deep. It enhances the story.

I sit back down, look across the table at the gal who is closing the deal. She is sheet white, eyes as large as silver dollars, looking back at me.

I look over, and see another truck, a little darker red but almost the same truck. I say "So, hey that truck looks good, and un-damaged." One of the sales guys runs over to me and says "Don't worry, we will fix your truck!" I say "That's not my truck, that's your truck. I don't own a truck, I own a car that was going to be traded in on a truck."

But as the story goes, I did end up buying that truck, for a much discounted price.

The end.

Something to think about when we sell our cars privately. There's a lot of young uys ( no offense) who , as written above, simply want to drive a Vette with no intention to buy it.

depends on the state. in oregon for example there is a policy on each car. they really rape you the more cars that you own. we don't have to carry personal insurance

wish we did, would be much cheaper

i never let people test drive sports cars. i'll take them on rides testing anything that they like but no test drives. generally tell them i have liability only on the car. just too much risk of what some unknown guy will do. at the same time i always jack up cars that i'm selling and go over the condition of the car testing anything that the buyer wishes.

i also don't expect to have people let me test drive their cars. i honestly find a test ride if done properly more informative. you can pay attention to all the little things going on.

the only car that i have sold in the past 5 years that i allowed a test drive on was a base model 07 civic and a 50yr old woman who was interested and later bought it. she didn't know jack about cars and told me honestly she had never driven one and wanted to see if she could deal with it day to day.

people that buy corvettes either want one or they don't. there is no...gee i'm not sure i think i need a test drive needed.
