Default Tire size help

PLEASE HELP. I have a 01 C5 with the Z06 polished wheels. Will a 285 40 ZR17 fit on the front without scrubbing? I have 295 35 18's on rear and currently have 265 40 17 on front and they work great but I need front tires badly and this guy has two matching F1 Supercar tires in excellent condition that are 285 40 17. These tires are almost brand new and he wants 45 bucks for each of them which includes mounting and balancing and disposal of my current tires. Any guidance to firm up the "REAL" answer for me would be greatly appreciated. Peace to you all. Capt Slap aka Craig Duncan

Is your Corvette lowered? Personally I wouldn't put anything larger than 275s on the front. I believe 285s wold cause some rubbing on cornering(?). I'm sure other guys will come along and clear this up...

Using a 285x40x17 on the front with a 295x35x18 on the rear, whether or not it rubs, may be a bad idea. The overall diameter of the fronts would be 26" and the rears 26.1". That may not be enough rake to avoid Traction Control issues. But you may get lucky and not have any problems with TC.

Thanks that I was thinking. This guy only had the 285's and not the right 275's so I was hoping I might could make it work. It's not lowered. I bought this car new and I think this is the 11th set of tires i put on her. 345000 miles and counting strong. Anyway these 285's are a sweetheart deal if I could use them. Thanks for your help and look fwd to anyone elses opinion also.

Your absolutely correct.

I would not buy a 285/40/17 for the front, and run a 295/35/18 in the rear. Your going to have active handling and traction control issues.

From what I have read you need at least a .5" different in overall diameter between the front and rear tires to avoid AH/TC issues.

General consensus is that not less than .5" and not more than 1.5". But as soon as I say that someone posts that they are running the same size at all four corners with no issues. So I guess everyone will just have to make their own decsions. I run 18x9.5 thin spokes on the front and rear with 275x35x18 front and 295x35x18 rear giving me a .5" rake and have no issues.

I agree with the 0.5" lower limit for active handling/traction control issues.

Is there an upper limit though ? What happens if you hit this upper limit ?
This is something I don't think has been discussed.

not really sure but guess it would trigger the traction control as well. maybe someone on the forum has definitive information.
