They look great, however this is one of those "form over function" Mods I just do not agree with. Besides being illegal in many states, I feel
making your car harder to see is just not the best way to go. I've been behind cars, especially in daylight, that have blackouts, and it's a lot harder to see the stoplights. A Nice product, that looks great, but a liability safety wise.

How about the entire CAR slowing down in front of you? Seems like a pretty lame excuse for following too close. The last indication I need to slow down is taillights... i usually pay attention to the lights, traffic, and vehicle ahead as signals.

I'm surprised by your response considering we both live in the same state. Some of these over medicated seniors need all the warning and advanced notice possible! As well as the visiting tourists who are usually looking at all the scenery while driving.
I wish I could mod my car so that every time I hit the brakes, bright LED lights would flash "I am stopping!" Maybe that would wake them up out of their prescription-induced semi-comas.
You know they are the first lenses that block as little light as possible and still look so dark. High quality acrylic. I was impressed. My friend has the same year corvette, he put his break lights on, while someone climbed in my car and put the breaks on. Yes it's darker, but you have NO problem at all seeing that you have break lights on, even in direct sunlight.
What holds them on are strips of double sided tape. Nice thing about that is "Sorry officer, I was just at a car show and forgot to take them off... there we go, thanks." And then when you get home... get some more tape and put them on again...
Honestly, it really depends on the officer of course. And I don't drive like an idiot (most of the time) so hey I might get pulled over... might not. At least it's not spray on the stock lenses!

Where did I say I was following too close? You've never had someone in front of you suddenly stop for no reason? Sometimes the only warning you get is the tailights! I just stated the fact that darkened taillights are harder to see, and an added risk.

It's the other guy I'm worried about. The distracted (texting, on the cell, eating, etc ) driver that scares me. I want every advantage I can find to make them see me!!

If I'd have had someone else there when I was taking the picture, I'd have taken one with the break lights on. You really see them. It's not like the spray on tint, or other cheaper plastic lenses that really block a lot of light. Everyone that's seen them has said "Man those things are too dark" until I step on the breaks and then I get "Oh wow! You really see right through those!"
Besides... I don't usually get people right behind me when I'm driving my better...
From: Dear Karma, I have a list of people you missed.

Correction: They're illegal in EVERY state

Please do post a pic. I have yet to see a blackout kit transparent enough in direct sunlight for me to feel comfortable with putting on my car.

Absolutely had that happen! Especially here in Florida! However, taillights have almost nothing to do with the outcome in that scenario...

False. They are illegal if not visible from 300-yards. covers, on their own, are not illegal.
ps... I love them on my c5!

If someone is texting or doing something else where there eyes are off the road, they wont see your brake lights whether they are blacked out or not.
False. DOT requirements are that all passenger vehicles have at least 2 RED reflex reflectors on the rear of the vehicle.
Double False. The light EMITTED has to be red. The device, nor the light itself, cannot be blue. I look forward to reading the article that specifies that the outside visible surface must be a reflex reflector in the color red. Please note that many OEM taillights are no longer reflex, but rather clear housings with LEDs.
(1) Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer, and any other vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least two taillamps mounted on the rear, which, when lighted as required in s. 316.217, shall emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of 1,000 feet to the rear, except that passenger cars and pickup trucks manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1972, which were originally equipped with only one taillamp shall have at least one taillamp. On a combination of vehicles, only the taillamps on the rearmost vehicle need actually be seen from the distance specified. On vehicles equipped with more than one taillamp, the lamps shall be mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable. An object, material, or covering that alters the taillamp's visibility from 1,000 feet may not be placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied over a taillamp.
I quote the above as the only state I care about and is just one example of how you're incorrect. Please get your facts straight before spreading non-sense.

Well why don't we just unplug the damn lights? Lights are used as a definitive signal that you are pressing the brake......your argument seems pretty lame if you ask me. Doing this mod decreases illumination.
Another thing is that you loose reflectivity. Yes there is a big difference between illumination and reflectivity.
But I guess if it looks good, safety is irrelevant.
This U Tube clip shows a C6 with blacked out taillights and its surprisingly visible. If you rearend that vette, it's not because of the taillights! Its because your an inattentive driver!

The requirement is so damned complicated, it is almost impossible to figure out.....the page link is below, the section on lights other than headlamps is a little more than 3/4 of the way down the page.
I doubt any average cop is going to know these requirements, much less be able to determine if you meet them or not, beyond a burned out bulb. I drove my '84 Ramcharger around for nearly a year after having it painted with tail light bulbs that had been partially painted too. The stupid body shop didn't tape them up properly, so you can imagine how far down from full intensity they were. Never once stopped for it.
