I got a large speeding ticket a few weeks ago, so I bought a
Escort 9500ix today. I know nothing about radar detectors so
any tips or advice about how to best use it would be appreciated.

Good choice. All-in-all maybe the best out there. I suggest keeping it in highway mode.
Just like other high end alarms it will go off constantly the first couple months, but unlike other alarms, it will be constantly locking out each false alarm after three false signals are detected.
So, after a couple months it will probably have found and locked out all of the false alarms in your area and and on the routes you normally drive. If it alarms after that you can figure there is a very good chance it's the real McCoy. That is the beauty of the 9500ix. Unlike other detectors, it will be pretty much silent after a few months unless there is a bogey.
I've had mine for almost a year and I KNOW it has saved me at least three tickets on hidden radar traps.
Mount it up high next to the Mirror, the Vette is a low car and you want to pick up Ka and Laser ASAP. If Laser hits you your toast, your only good if you pick up some back scatter from a Car ahead of you getting hit.
Corvettemods sells a nice cable that plugs into the Mirror harness, so no more long cord. Works great.
Here on the West Coast at least, its only Ka and Laser you have to worry about. (and Cameras) K & X are nothing but Speed signs, alarms and door openers....
The 9500ix is a great unit. You need to be aware of how to use a radar detector. It is not a set it and forget it proposition. I did a lot of research before I bought mine. At the very least you need to know how to interpret all the different bands and recognize that this is NOT a laser jammer and that it nearly always cannot protect you from laser. Like B747VET said, the detector will learn to weed out repeat alarms by not reporting an alarm after seeing it 3 times at the same location. It is possible that if you go by the same cop in the same location on 3 separate occasions, it will interpret the cop as a false alarm and store it as a false. Thus I suggest you turn off the auto-false off and manually set a signal as false when you go by it (for example when you know its a automatic door or similar).

Yes, mount it up high but not up high into the tinted area at the top of the windshield. Been told that decreases the range of the detector.

You're thinking about a limited number of other cars that use a metallic type tint. The tint in a C5 windshield is non-metallic and has no significant effect on radar waves. It is much better to mount it as high as possible, as previously noted.

Taken from from the Passport's website:
Positioning Detectors
First rule of thumb: For RADAR, the higher the better. For LASER, the lower the better. We recommend placing the detector as low as possible. Laser is more difficult to detect than radar. With that said, as far as positioning the detector, you want to give the detector a clear field of view: front and rear. Avoid placing the detector behind the tinting at the top of most windows, or hidden behind parking stickers, wiper blades, or anything similar that will obstruct the detector's window or lens. We no longer include the visor mount with the detectors because most cars have tinting that will reduce the laser detection range. We also advise placing the detector where it will not obstruct your view.
how do you update the locations of speed cameras, etc for the 9500ix? if I buy one of these, does it come with free updates ? Or, what does updating cost, if not free? thanks, Don
I got a 9500ix as well this week. Finally installed it today. Drove for about an hour or so and I drove past the same spot twice and got the "STORED" indication on the screen. I'm loving the concept of it learning it's picking up crap.
This will make it less likely for me to ignore it as I did was my old cheapie radar detector.
Note that it's a RADAR DETECTOR... not a POLICE DETECTOR. Just keep that in mind
That's what I try to explain to people, but the concept just doesn't click with some folks. "But it's a police car!" Uh uh, it doesn't mean he's using radar or lidar.

I've had that "talk" many times. Some people just don't get it
