I just put "Lilith" to bed in the barn for the winter. I won't wake her up until about a quarter to May. All four wheels/tires up on curved caster rollers, gently wiped down with a damp cloth for dust, battery tender in place, full tank of gas and a fitted cover in place.
A mechanic friend of mine told me to go back and add a bottle of "Stabil" and throw some moth ***** under the vehicle to keep the mice away. I do not keep livestock or feed of any kind in the barn.
What is the forum's opinion on the "Stabil" and the moth ball idea?
Regards,
Gunny John
PS. Happy Birthday to all us Jarheads! 237 years old today.
(BYW, I found out why moths have such small *****. So few of them know how to dance.)
i would put some dryer sheets in the car along with putting some around your exhaust tips holding them on with elastics so mice an critters cant get inside to make a home.
I use Stabil every year when I put mine up for the winter.
dryer sheets are something a lot of people recommend, I've never tried them, can't hurt anything.
Questions answered. I like the idea about the dryer sheets. I'll give it a try.
Best Regards,
Gunny John
BTW. Dryer sheets. Several years ago, I had my 50+ years old IH 240 stored out behind the barn. I put a tin can over the straight up exhaust to keep the snow and rain out. (So much for Winter storage prep!) Well, sometime in the early Spring the can must have blown off. When I went to fire up the old sweetheart, she gave one cough, a PFLOUMPFF noise, and something black shot up from the exhaust stack. Well, the little toad who had taken up residence in the stack landed on the hood in front of me, covered with soot, and blinking his eyes as if to say, "WTFO!" I laughed so hard the tears ran down my legs.

I always put Stabil in the tank - but do it before I fill the tank. i put the dryer sheets inside the car. i hang moth ***** in the engine compartment and off the tail pipes plus a dish of moth ***** under the car. last thing i stuff the tail pipes with plastic bags. Keeps out the mice !!
Having lived up north-Stabil-check, mothballs and/or dryer sheets-check. Critters will eat the s$%t out of the wires, insulation and interior. One other thought--big can of dessicant jell in the interior. Depending on humidity levels will prevent mildew. If you can't find it, go online to gun supply vendors. Often used in gun safes. Lastly-you might check out Tire Cradles-Google it-prevents flat spotting of the tires. FWIW.

I always put Sta-Bil in my gas tank when I store the car - even if it is for only 4 months or so. Just put some in this past week in anticipation of not getting the car out for a while. And yes, put it in before you fill the tank up - that way it gets into both tanks.
I think I'm covered now. I will do the Stabil, the moth ***** and the dryer sheets. Good idea about the desiccant; I'll just pull the extra box from my gun safe, heat it dry again, and put it in the cockpit. Wonderful advise!
Stabil, like Techron needs to be added to the nearly empty tanks before fillup to get into both tanks. Then it needs to be run a bit to get into the fuel system.

Yes to the moth ***** for sure. Get a cheap tupper ware container about the size for a sandwich or maybe those littl round ones. get several. There are some cheapo versions out there. I think Glad is one of them.
Drill holes in the lids so you can put the moth ***** in the container but the holes allow for the escape of the smell. it's easier this way to keep them all together and collect them later.
Place the containers at intervals around the car. Especially aorund the tires as that's how the mice climb up. And put a couple in the engine bay.
I actually put one inside my pick up that I don't drive all that much.
Now then don't use all of the containers so that you have two lids for each container. Then when you pick up the containers you have lids without holes to cover the container and store your mothballs for later use.
This comes in real handy for those of us who get to drive our vettes through the winter, weather and road conditions permitting of course.

You are correct sir, Stabil is great stuff, I put it in my riding mower, roto tiller, 55 chevy, and vette! It is great stuff but you do need to run it through the system for it to work!

But anything just under 1/2 tank is fine (our system provides gas from the left tank at a greater rate than the engine uses, the fuel returns to the right tank and is pumped back into the left tank through a return pipe. Its constantly mixed). And just so you know....Sea Foam is an additive we use for a bunch of things. Half a bottle in the oil and run it before a change will take the sludge out, a full bottle in the gas tank acts like a fuel system cleaner, and a bottle sucked in a vacuum line, like off the master cylinder, then shut off for a while and ltarted later will decarb the cylinders (all directions on the can). Point is, its a very good fuel stabilizer also, so one bottle and run it a bit is good for storage.
Boy I'm glad I live down south so I can drive my Vette all winter. It sounds like a real chore to store a Vette for the bad months. I feel for y'all that have to do this because I know how much you love your cars. BTW I put stabil in my mowers and motorcycle as I DO park them all winter. Even down here the grass stops growing around the end of November.
Had a Tahoe several years ago that had a second battery tray. Had to store it outside for a couple winter months (MN) so I put moth ***** all over the car, including a handful on the secondary (empty) battery tray. Time to start it up and was barely able to get it to run. Limped to the dealer for repairs - turns out mice had eaten plug wires and injector parts - and they built a nest on top of the moth ball protected battery tray ... I don't bother with moth ***** as a mouse repellent anymore.
