Default my 2002 zo6 eats oil

I have an 02 cammed zo6. It has only 18500 miles on it and runs perfect. It doesnt have any oil leaks, but it burns about 3/4 of a quart every 600 to 800 miles. Is this normal for a cammed c5? Does anyone else have this issue? Just want to know if i should be concerned. Thank you.

Did you install new valve seals when the cam was installed?

I bought mine three years ago, with only 7 thousand miles already cammed and all modifications done. I know the springs are harden with the cam. And car has no leaks, after I got the rear main seal leak taken care of. And I also put on a catch can. But it still eats oil. Thanks for your help.

It is more normal if you drive hard with LS cars. They tend to throw oil through the PCV at high RPM. My car uses a bit of oil as well.

Its a Chevy. You know they are running good when they use/leak oil!

This is a known concern with the LS6. GM was replacing the top compression and oil rings to correct on vehicles that would see high rpm and were using oil under warranty. Some say the condition is that the cylinders are not perfectly round (have flat spots) that cause blowby feeding the PCV system. Catch can can help but you still will go through oil, just not as much through the throttlebody. I thought I had this problem after installing 243 heads but found 4 bad valve seals. Watch your oil level.

Thanks everyone... I feel better knowing I am not the only one and to know that its common with LS motors. I think i have to add about 3 quarts also. I hardly drive cause it just sits super clean in garage but when i drive it, I drive it hard and wind it out alot. Cant help it since its a treat to drive. Thanks again everyone.

I find that hard to believe as normal. The motor holds 6.4 quarts and your putting in 3 to 4 quarts between oil changes. Why even change the oil ? just get a K&N oil filter and within 10,000 miles you have all new oil anyway. Just say'n !

do a vacuum test, takes a few seconds, look for any flutter in the gauge. if none proceed to a leakdown test. with that kind of oil consumption you very well could have a cylinder with cracked ringlands and or rings.

both these tests need to be done, report back with the results.

if you have flutter in the vacuum reading by the way that's more or less a confirmation of low compression in a cylinder.

too much timing in the tune could have done it. many things.

do those two tests and let us know the results

if both tests check....which would be unusual using that much it would be high time to improve the pcv system

using a quart every 2000 miles isn't that uncommon. a quart every 500-800 will take out exhaust valves eventually if left untreated. the carbon build up will cake on, prevent cooling and eventually the valve frags.

I lose about 1-1.5 quarts after putting in 7 quarts. I normally change it after 5K miles driven fairly hard. Very normal for our cars.
