Default Drill Noise

Hi,
I have a 98 Vert that at times an electric motor kicks on under the hood. Sounds like a cordless drill running. It comes on then goes right back off. This occurs only occasionally. Any ideas what this is?
Thanks

When do you notice it, driving or stopped?

This sure sounds like a bad headlight gear but this would only be true if the OP observes the problem after turning on the headlights.

It happens randomly. The headlights work fine. I replaced the gear last year. Could it be a lumbar pump??

Wouldn't think so - I believe those are under the seat.

To me it almost sounds like the Air Pump (Smog pump) that comes on for a short while at first start up -

Other thing could be the fuel pump starting to whine - which will sound like a drill as well!

Does it sound like it is more right behind the drivers seat or more towards the front on drivers side?

Thanks,Matt

Does it get loud...kind of like a turbo? Are you hearing the sound from inside the car? Idler pulley or ac compressor bearing? Get a long screw driver put the tip to the different accsories and put your ear to the plastic handle. This will help you isolate the noise.

It for sure comes from under the hood. It sounds like a dentist drill buzzzzzz then stops after about 4-5 seconds. Hi Madmatt good hearing from you, Happy Thanksgiving.

It's the smog pump on my c5. It sure had me puzzled the first time I heard it. I was able to get out and open the hood when I heard it the second time. It was very easy to tell that is what it was with the hood up.

Thank you!

What you could do is pull the pump off and test it on the bench to see if that is the noise or have someone start the Vette and you stand outside of the Vette and see if you can pinpoint the sound!

But it sure sounds like the smog pump - mines sounds like that too, but I have mine set-up different for my blower set-up! (It is turned into a Vacuum pump while under boost, with a wire harness from Racetronix) I can hear it every time!

Thanks,Matt
