every since i bought my vette the only thing i hated was the horn its more hight pitched like a honda or something, i'm embarrassed to honk at a-holes on the road and turned it off so it doesn't beep when i lock it. anyways is this normal or is something else? if not is there anything i can do?
In the archives someone said that his C5 sounded like a Ford pickup truck. When the horns in my '98 failed I found that they both had the same part number which was also used on Ford F150 pickup trucks! I bought one low and one high note horn from Rock Auto, they are GM Corvette part numbers but different than the ones the car came with. If you like the sound of C6 horns they are available from Rock Auto and the pictures show the same physical shape and electrical connections as C5 horns.
Added an AOOGA horn from HF scares a lot of people
I had one of my OEM horns go bad. Found one in the junk box with same tone but different connector. Spliced into the wiring leaving original connector in place. Sounded just like before.
Then I saw a lot of space where the horns are mounted.
Got an AOOGA horn at $9.99 at Harbor Freight, an old relay, a SPDT momentary - off - solid connection toggle switch, a 20 amp inline fuse and several feet of wire. Mounted the AOOGA horn on same bolt that holds the other 2 horns on. Mounted the fuse and relay alongside the battery. Mounted the SPDT switch on the dash near ignition switch.
The SPDT switch is connected to the relay which operates the AOOGA horn. Can either sound it with the momentary contact, turn it off in the center off position, or have it sound in parallel with the other 2 horns when in the other solid connection position.
Found leaving it in the position to allow the AOOGA horn to sound with the normal horns is fine. If I want to attract someones attention I i can use the momentary position to get the AOOGA effect.
Check to see both horns are really functioning. If just hearing a high note then your low note horn is bad.
Thanks guys for the quick responses so i assume the low tone is out, so should i get a direct replacement or are there any aftermarket horns that are a little louder?
