I just got my z06 this past weekend (used 2001 with 6300 miles, make that 7300 miles now :) ) and I notice that when I shift from 1st to 2nd, sometimes it wants to go into 4th and is difficult (takes some extra effort) to get it into 2nd.
Is this a common problem with the 6sp or is normal?
Sounds like what you are describing is the skip shift feature - does the light on the dash tell you that you are skipping a shift? It is designed to "force" you to a first to 4th shift under certain conditions (car fully warm, light accelleration). Most of us spend $20 and buy a CAGS (skip shift eliminator) and the "problem" goes away.
Actually, I have seen the light come on occassionally. I didn't get an owners manual with the car, so I'm not up on all of the gauges and lights. Thanks!
Out of curiosity, did you install the CAGS (skip shift eliminator) for performance reasons or did you find the shift skip feature annoying?
I put the CAGS defeat on my C5, but now with the Z I havn't -haha because I find I am excelerating faster in 1st gear! I believe you have to go over 14mph to avoid the "tug" to 4th.
If you don't do the CAGS defeat, you can do as I do in a turn. I just leave the clutch in just a little bit longer until the 1-4 shift light goes off. I'm just lazy...
Splurge the $20 for a Skip Shift Eliminator. You shouldn't have to change the way you drive to accomodate some stupid gas mileage feature on a $50k car. Just my .02.
Jeff, another solution if you don't want to put in the computer aided gear selector defeat device which is dirt cheap and a 5 min install is to just shift from 1st to 3rd. The motor has more than enough torque and doesnt seem to mind at all.
The !cags mod was the FIRST thing I did to my car other than to wax it. Not tough at all. I just jacked the rear crossmember under the diff, found the connection, and capped it. Some people have made their own using resistors for total expense of about $2. But for $20, get one that plugs into both ends and keeps them clean. No hassle. As you can see, I've had my fill of wiring after I did the RS in the sig. :D
You could probably be even lazier than me and just pull the car into a Pep Boys or whatever local garage. Ask if you can put your car up for 3 minutes to check something. Pop the cap, swap the tops, drop the car, and drive home....... in whatever gear you damn well choose! :p:
