I have a 98 corvette and the tail pipe was hanging down and was loose. I took it into a mechanic and they showed me that the pipe completely came free from the muffler. I had 2 choices...weld it back together for $180 or get a new muffler for around $500. I chose to weld it. Right choice?
sure - - although it's unusual for that to happen in my view . .
OR - - you could spend about $1500 and replace that stock stuff with Billy Boat Route 66 . . or Corsa, etc . . . and pick up a little power and great sound.
Fixing it wasn't a lot of money, but it sounds high for just welding it.
Other inexpensive options would be to pick up another stock set of used mufflers. They are very cheap. I have seen a few of them free and some at about $50 for the pair. Another good options is to upgrade to the Z06 titanium. Frequently they are for sale at about $300 for the pair.
If you want aftermarket there are lots of good choices and most are pretty expensive. Used ones seem to go for about 1/2 of new prices.

Rather expensive IMO to just weld the pipe back together. But, it's done now. Hopefully it lasts a long time for you.
