It's cumbersome, but doable. Yes, just loosen the console completely so you can lift it as far as the wires will allow...you can see better from the passenger seat, but I always do it blind from the driver's side. It's a simple connector, once you see it you'll know what to do. Some members lengthen the wires so the job is much easier the next time. If your console is painted be sure to be extra careful against scratching it.
I know this digs up an old thread and isn't exactly within forum rules, but I wanted to provide closure to this one as I had to figure this out this evening.
There are four small "slots" on the switch that snap into slots in the center console. You have to very carefully stick a tiny flat blade in and work each corner lose and lift carefully. I could only get the screwdriver into three of the four slots, but with 3 pulled lose, the 4th came out easily by jiggling it a little bit. Mine had a bit of yellow paint right where the screwdriver was to be inserted. Be careful. The plastic is very thin there.
Putting this dude back in as a royal pain in the ***. I didn't even make a half-hearted effort. I bought some high quality connectors and spliced in 1' of wire to make it easy to remove should I find I need to remove the console in the future. I'd highly advise it if you ever have the center console off for any reason...
