Default Clutch Fluid

What type of fluid does the clutch master cylinder take on a 1999 six speed?

A good Dot4 brake fluid should be fine.

Ranger has a good clutch care vid & read.

DOT 3 !!!! per owners manual!!!

Wow just noticed that Dot 4 may be used if it's compatable.....but you have to be sure by reading each brand's bottle.

Still with Dot 3 your safe per owners manual.

I used Delco Supreme 11 DOT-3 last time I ranger'd it. Tried to buy the same stuff from the dealer last month and it has been superceded by a DOT-3 'Brake & Clutch Fluid', not to be confused with the Delco Super DOT-4 Clutch and Brake Fluid which has been available for a while and is used in the Ranger video.

The first time I ranger'd the clutch, I used the Super DOT-4 fluid and the clutch squeaked when it was depressed. Immediately changed it out for DOT3 and the squeak went away. My .02.

Didn't the manual get updated to change the fluid from DOT 3 to DOT 4? Same as the manual was changed altering the plug gap?

DOT 4 is fine, it is DOT 5 that is not backward compatible.

the caps were put on when DOT 3 was the recommended fill. Now GM has changed the recommendation and says to go with DOT4. You can mix 3 and 4 no problem just remember if you mix 3 and 4, you just have a full fill of DOT3 afterwards. The difference is a higher boiling point of DOT 4. GM also updated the plug specs and oil specs as well so what was written when the car was new is no longer 100% valid.
