Default Muffler hanger bolts

So apparently the 2 bolts that stick down out of the rear bumper support that the rubber muffler hangers attach to are just floating and are not secure in the hole. I was in the process of re-hanging my mufflers. When i pushed up to line the holes on the rubber hangers to the bolts sticking down out of the bumper support both bolts pushed up into the holes and are now inside my bumper support cavity Who designs this crap?
Anyway, anyone know how to retrieve the 2 bolts from inside the bumper support and push them back into the holes? I felt around for openings in the bumper support, but didn't find any. I'm seriously thinking about just getting some self tapping bolts and screw them in the holes to hold the muffler hanger in place What a pita

Many have drilled a larger hole between the two where the original holes are.
That way, once you fish it back into the holes put some type of filler into the drilled "fishing hole".
Here is a picture of what you have lost inside of the impact bar/tube.
I suggest putting thin, crush nut on to the studs, to hold in place
(see picture below) to make sure that never happens again.

This is good to know, thanks!

I have one side that is loose. I've gotten lucky a few times swapping out catbacks. I think I'll go with the crush nut next time.

Just got done....it wasn't too bad of a job

I removed the tail light, stuck a drill in and drilled a hole into the top of the impact bar.

Freshly drilled hole

From there I stuck one of those long retractable magnets in the hole and had my wife fish around for the stud bar thingy while I shined a light up into the hanger holes from below. I was skeptical at first, but after a couple of minutes I saw the end of one of the studs and fished it back down into the hole and quickly pressed one of those crush nuts onto the stud. The other stud followed...annnnnnd, mission complete
I completed the job by cleaning up the site with rubbing alcohol, cut a small piece of black plexi glass I had laying around and RTV'd it to the impact bar to seal the hole I drilled.

Thanks for the help again everyone...and I hope this helps the next victim that is unaware of how easy it is to lose the muffler hanger studs inside the impact bar.

Nice job & thank's for posting up the pictures.

These snugged onto the threads of the two studs, make them bullet proof from that happening.

yep got them on there. Should have been this way from the factory. I guess GM couldn't afford to spend 23 cents for these during production.

I'm not sure GM ever believed or cared that anyone would ever take one of their cars apart.

Good job.

Some info for those looking for these push nuts. The hanger bolts/studs are 13mm socket/M8 threads. I just bought an assortment pack of Dorman Push Nuts (961-345) at Advance Auto Parts for ~$3.50. The pack has (4) M8 push nuts.
