actually found a nice c5 i'm probably going to pick up today or tomorrow. just so i have it in the back of my head what's the average going rate for mint to near mint chrome 2001+ oem wheels ?
couldn't find any sale threads with a quick glance
Are they chrome? or polished? I don't think there were any OEM chrome wheels. The stock vettes had polished clear coated thin spokes. Chrome was not an option from GM.
have to be polished then. and or aftermarket chrome. i'm heading to meet the guy at 7 so we will see. it's a yellow 2001 so i'd want to use a gunmetal tsw. just was curious what i could get for the stockers to offset. guy said the tires were new recently so i'm sure whatever those are will pad value higher to some degree
Although it's true there were no chrome wheels available from the factory, some dealers would swap the wheels prior to delivery. I picked up my new '01 from the dealer with chrome oem wheels.

i thought i had came across those before. seemed to find them on black and yellow cars the most. i'll have to check the wheels for the stamp.
There were no OEM chrome wheels for 2001. Painted or polished only. A set of 4 polished wheels should sell for $400-$450.
My 2001 came with Polished GM Speedlines (Cast/Made in Italy). First week I had the car I took it to Discount Tire and paid $1100 to get the chrome swap-out done... still look like new after 13 years as a DD...
back to twittling the thumbs. drove down and checked the car out. paint is pretty decent. few random chips but nothing major. nice interior for the age as well. it was a 90k mile 2001 with price talk around 13.5 which i was good with if the car was reasonably clean.
i get there. car has the rear axle leak and a pretty good one. intake manifold and or rear main is leaking in addition to the pan. car is also a big time oil burner. black soot all over the bumper which was mostly cleaned off when i got there but hidden in cracks. also black tailpipes with some good slime in them. couldn't quite tell if it was a misfire or compression was down in a hole. had a rhythmic stumble at idle. tires were also 5 years old and hard as rocks.
i just can't see paying over 10-11 for it when i'm looking at two grand worth of repairs that i can see with a 15 minute inspection. the owner would probably get more selling to an uninformed buyer
i told the guy i'd sleep on it and work up a guesstimate on the repairs. i'm just not sure i even want to touch a 90k car with the oem clutch and what may wind up being a motor rebuild sooner rather than later.
as for the wheels. polished oem but they were in good condition. probably solid 8s on the 1-10 scale. no curb rash, no flaws just mileage worn clearcoat
after you look at enough of the cars, the prices start making more sense. that took me a minute to figure out
i think i'd be money ahead spending 16-18k on a c5 or 23-27k on a c6.
the lower priced cars i've looked at so far just have been in need of too much work
Yup, those numbers look realistic, maybe just a tad higher on the C5 for a really nice example. C6 looks to me like you nailed it. Strangely, around here there's not much, if any discounting between a 07, 06 and 05 C6. So for the numbers you're quoting, you should be able to jump into a 06 or 07. Also, I think you're right about the one your looking at. You know about some of the items needing repair, but what about the stuff you don't know about. That soot from the exhaust would concern me.
I kinda hope you go with another C5 and stay in this group.

there's some nice C5s down here that haven't had weather like the Northwest . . .probably be a few of us willing to scoop you up at the airport if you got serious about something . . you could fly in and road trip it home !

arizona is probably the best corvette market in the country
the only thing that makes me nervous about doing such is with what i've found. having worked in a shop when i was younger and rebuilding cars since i was 15 i'm better than the average duck at spotting problems. if i found a good owner who was willing to go over all the details i could so doing so but it would depend
this last guy was a really cool owner. made the car sound great over the phone, then i get there and do the inspection and find multiple issues. not small ones either. quality dealerships i've often had the best luck with when buying used. private party is just such a crapshoot. i don't mind that if it's an hour drive from my home, just would hate to waste multiple plane tickets and motel rooms while searching

that's just it. if i spot 2k worth of repairs in 15 minutes i really don't know how deep it is and would have to buy with the idea of dropping the undercarriage and doing all the seals, new clutch and probably a rehone and valve job with new guides and seals. to me that makes it a 9-10k car simply because of what all needs to be done just to make it a solid driver. i'm looking at somewhere around 100 hours of labor and a bare minimum of 2000, probably more to make it a solid driver. the car would score a below at manheim without a doubt

Understood -- just wanted to make the offer to a Forum brother if it would widen your search and selection . . .

Skip it. I've always found that if I can spot 2G's worth of work in 15 minutes, there is 3 more waiting for me when I get into it.
I'm usually pretty good about spotting problems, and certainly know better than buying a car out of state sight unseen. But I just got the wood laid to me by a guy I thought was being honest and picked up a car that I felt was a really good deal. It was supposedly a no accident, mint car with just a small spiderweb on the front bumper cover. $4k at the body shop (+ the other 4K I spent in mods) later...It's not such a good deal. At least now it's right, and I won't be pissed every time I look at it. My wife on the other hand, has different feelings about it. LOL.
