Default Car Wrap question

I am thinking about getting my car wrapped.
I am wondering if there is any disadvantages or advantages over getting it painted?
Also, will a wrap chip like paint? Or is it more likely to tear?

Any ideas and comments would be appreciated

The advantages are....

When you get tired of it, just remove it.

It preserves your original paint.

I can't really think of any disadvantages. It does require a little more care than paint. I doubt any of use automatic car washes to begin with, but those are definitely out.

I use these products for wrap care, and recommend them to all my customers.

I would imagine that some are going to chime in, with the Plasti Dip stuff, but I have no experience with that.

It is very durable. Very similar to paint as far as wear goes. You can buff out light scratches. Another advantage is if it does tear, you can just have that panel re-wrapped. Can't do that with paint.

Here's my Yukon for reference. We wrapped it using Avery Dennison's Supreme wrapping film. (It's white by the way).

I wrap my daily driver a different color every year. Its no different to take care of then paint as for washing. Some waxes work better then others. There are special products out there but the manufacturers do a lot of durability testing on their own and take the info from installers so provide the best info on product and care use.
It will chip just like paint and much easier. Matte films are more work to take care of. Matte white in particular. Avery, Oracal, Hexis and 3M are the big boys and all have unique colors.

For the money its a quick easy way to do a color change or add accents. In the long run its just a big sticker that will break down over time and need to be replaced. Most have 5-10 year warranties on vertical panels and none on horizontal panels. It does not shine like paint but does look good when installed right.

Matte White with Gloss Black Accents. Car is a platinum color stock.

So this isnt for someone who drives their car a bit and plans to have it on there forever?

I have a black car but was thinking about going to matte black, but i also thought it would be easier to care for not harder

Nothing is harder to take car of then black paint so you would be fine. You just have to keep the film clean to get the best life out of it.

We have an HHR at the PD used for the Silent Witness (Crime Stopper) program . . it's parked outside all the time, washed infrequently and despite a 5 year warranty, the wrap faded and cracked after 3 years. . . same thing on a black Avalanche and we got hammered by the stealership for the residual damage taking it off.

Did they choose the wrong supplier? Maybe - - but it was a headache- at least in the Arizona sun. Point is- I think there are good stories and some not so good ones out there - - pick your provider carefully.
