Notices a ratteling noise from the shifter when I shift and accelerate if I take my hands off the shifter... So I opened it up and found the shifter as dry as the desert. I lubed all the sliding points of the shifter with bearing grease, put it back together and WOW, what an improvement.. It is now quiet, it silky smooth and just drops into the gears without that notchy old dry crusty movement of before. Has anybody else experienced this?
Unfortunately, you have to take the center panel out to do this, the only reason is the rubber shifter boot plate has 4 bolts that you can't reach with the center panel on. It's not hard and it gives you a chance to clean up the lint and stuff under the panel. The shifter assembly was bone dry, heat rises in that tunnel and just dries out everything, the shifter is in need of grease big time if you have never been in there. I have 72K miles that thing was metal on metal, when I was done my shifter felt like silk, smooth and shifted from 2nd to 3rd like a direct path was created, all from just grease.. Give it a try it isn't hard to do... Good luck.
PS: I was wondering why 2nd to 3rd was giving me some issues, and it makes sense what other vette drivers say our shifter feels like a truck instead of a sports car.. This is a quick fix if you ask me..

You need to either replace the shifter box or at least the rubber grommets. If you read online how to do it it is about a 15 minute job. Here are the grommets:
I can pretty much assure you this is your problem. I bought a beautiful 2001 vert last year and it's only fault was a terrible rattle from the shifter when I accelerated (unless I held it). I ended up replacing the shifter itself for other reasons but I can promise you if you remove your shifter box, replace the grommets, and replace everything it WILL be fixed and silent....
By the way I am very busy right now and ended up doing 3 posts instead of one long one because I didn't have time 15 minutes ago!
Hey tigtorch, I did notice my grommets on the shifter were dried and cracked, so I am taking your advise and ordered 4 of the C5 shifter grommets from Ebay... This is why I like this forum, sharing knowledge from smart people that found a problem, fixed the problem and shared that information to others so they don't have to re-invent the wheel again... Thanks...
For others that may want to order the grommets, here is the link: You get 4 two to use and two for later or a friend... They say they wear out in a few years due to heat.... good luck http://www.ebay.com/itm/281074703469...S:3160&vxp=mtr
