Removal of the leather shift boot cover is easy, I have a 99 6 speed, the leather boot is attached to a black plastic ring, it is stapled to it and the plastic ring has tabs that click when pushed into the hole. Just remove the shift ball, us a small screw driver to gently pry the gap between the leather and the plastic center panel and lift up slowly all around the leather boot and it will come off. I have seen some have a metal ring but not mine.. Good luck.
