Default New Tranmission?

Okay, so I've been having some issues with my tranny for a little while.
Thought I had fixed it a while back, seemed to go away.

I'm going to try a few things first before I just go get a new transmisison, such as new fluid, shifter alignment, things like that. Probably drain the fluids and such, make sure no air pockets got in there.

But, just in case this does not completely solve the problem, I'm thinking that I'll probably end up buying a new transmission. My gears shift hard. I'm scared half the time to let off the clutch during spirited driving because of fear of dropping the trans.

I would rather just get a new one and be done with it.
So, I was looking at RPM transmisisons, and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with them? Or, if not, who would you recommend? I think that more than 1 of my synchros may be gone, and I know they're expensive to replace, and might as well do them all if they're going to do 3-4 of themem; and at that price, might as well get a new transmission I figure.

Thanks for everyone who helps out!

several vendors on here are capable of a quality rebuild, it is usually synchros, maybe a bent fork, synchros and forks is maybe 700 is parts, the rest is labor. think about the future also, if i'm replacing completely, it'll be for a TR6060 unit. but that can be overkill for you

Have you shopped for new transmissions yet? I'd be interested in what they cost.

I went with a RPM level IV and haven't looked back, it's been 3 years. I did that in mind that I would add substantial power to the car either heads/cam or S/C.

Give them a call, you can't go wrong with them.

Just want to give a quick thanks to everyone who has answered so far.

to respond to everyone :

@fourg63, I figured basically right around what you said, 700 for parts, and the labor will probably be at least another 700. I heard they're super expensive to replace becuase they're tough to do. I could be wrong through of course.

@Ren, RPM has a few options in the low to high 2k range. I figure for this price, it's not a bad idea to just go ahead and ge the new one as I'll probably be spending close to that just replacing the syncrhos.

@Edmond, Thanks for the reponse! I am planning on staying N/A, but adding as much power as possible while doing so. I think the RPM IV would be a good fit for me if I go that route. if you wouldn't mind, could you PM with details of cost? Once again, only if you wouldn't mind.

I appreciate all the help so far guys!

Steve,

I got the Level IV and upgraded to bronze fork pads. Now keep in mind this was years ago but I think I ended up spending about $2200 or so delivered to the FedEx hub about 1 hour away and I went to pick it up.

Check it out:

http://www.rpmtransmissions.com/t-564l60epage

This is the way I look at it:

Whether you put a stock rebuilt or a performance built trans in there is the same labor. Dropping the trans and putting it back up is the same work.

So why not put something heavier duty in there so you have options down the line when it comes to power additions.

BTW, it's also a great time to do your clutch/FW/PP, speed bleeder for the clutch, torque tube couplers, headers and clutch cylinder. Also, since you have to remove the shifter, this is also a great time to do that as well if you don't like the factory shifter.

It's also time to upgrade to ARP hardware for the clutch/FW/PP as well as header studs if you end up doing headers.

Premium synthetic fluids in the trans/differential are a must at this point as well, IMO.

If you don't have a shop manual, now is the time to get one. Best $250 you will ever spend.

As you can see, the work can build up but if you can afford to have the car down and take your time doing it yourself, you will learn a lot about the car and take pride in having done it yourself as well as save a lot of $$$

I completely agree with you. I think if I didn't plan on doing much with it, I would just do a rebuild. But I know that down the road I'll up doing a complete swap so would rather do it now. Sounds like a good time to go ahead get a lot of stuff replaced. I may just have to go ahead and do it.

RPM level 6 here with 700hp at the wheels, Trans has been flawless for 2 years and I'm not gentile with my car, seen several track passes also.

Trans was $2800, and that is dirt cheap to handle 700hp all day long!

Another satisfied RPM customer here, although mine is the RPM Level IV 4L60E A4 Transmission. I had it installed in July 2012. So far it's a blast, having fun!!!

I should've also mentioned to look at the classifieds from the vendors. I ended up getting 10% off as a vendor was running a special through RPM at the time.

Seems like everyone has nothing but good things to say so far about RPM!

I think the price is good too, to be honest.
I guess now I'll have to start saving up over the summer for the long list of mods coming its way!

Btw, notice anything drastic with the cam/intake added?

Yeah that's an insane price to handle supercar power.

Your in luck OP, a level 6 trans just went up for sale for $1800 with 1000 miles on it in for sale section, you would be crazy not to scoop that up! Your welcome!

you will be able to upgrade your current trans for way less than putting in a whole new trans that will be weaker. Post in your local section to find the best shop near you, because if you go with something like RPM transmissions, you are going to pay a hefty fine in shipping all the way from PA.

except for this post above. That is an absolute steal. But it sounds to me like you have a manual.

Yup, I do sadly. Otherwise, I'd be all over that in a second.

And just wondering, what makes you say that RPM is a weaker transmission?

it's not. rpm will rebuild your transmission to be way stronger than a new oem trans for a lesser cost. heck probably half the cost of a new trans from GM. but dont get me wrong. they aren't the only ones who can do that.

Okay I see what you're saying.
I wasn't actually going to buy a new OEM transmission, was going to by a new trans. from RPM.

Well they certainly make quality stuff, but like I said look for something local first because shipping will be expensive. You will need to ship your core out to them and then also pay for the shipping to send the new trans. I could see you spending a good $250 on shipping.
