How much does powder coating cost and how do you pick the color/shade? Do different shops offer different colors or is there some standard? What are the advantages to powder vs auto zone kit?
It's been some time since I had my calipers powder coated but I had purchased the powder coated calipers on an exchange basis. I don't recall who did them but there is someone on the forum here that does this work. Basically I purchased the rebuilt cailpers and brackets from the fellow that did the powder coating. He rebuilds the calipers with new pistons and seals. This allowed me to have the calipers in hand while replacing my old calipers. Afterwards I sent my old calipers back to him to recieve my core charge back. I told him I wanted to match my exterior color, (magnetic red) and he chose the color that matched.
Advantages of powdercoating is that the finish will stay perfect forever. Brake dust will absolutely not stick to it and it will never dull in appearance or chip off. Having painted calipers in the past, no matter what paint you use it will eventually wear out and need a repaint. Powdercoating was not only a great aesthetic mod but they also stay clean and looking like new with literally no effort or scrubbing when washing the car. The picture shows the calipers after almost 7 years of being on the car.
I used Duplicolor's Caliper Paint Kit, you brush it on, takes about 4 coats. It contains ceramic and looks great and wears great. The kit contains: paint, brush, and cleaner.
If your going to paint then yourself then use the Duplicolor...its the good stuff!
I used red Duplicolor caliper paint in the spray can and it still looks great after a year. A friend painted his G35 calipers blue with engine enamel and it didn't last too long. Just a tip, may sound silly, but I put a little bit of chap stick on the Corvette letter before painting them and it made it a lot easier to remove the paint.
Costa about $15 and still looks great 5 years later
