12 disc CD problem
I have 2 cartridges for my cd player, one plays fine. Sometimes when I use the second one it is not recognized (no cd indicator shows on the radio) other times the indicator shows but will not switch to the cd mode, no matter what I try all I have is the radio function. Other than just using the one cartridge
any ideas out there.

Not sure what it could be, But you have to keep in mind that it is 10 plus years old, If it were me I would install an iPod adaptor, Nothing like having 7000 plus songs at your finger tips.

Tried that, they look the same -- even pulled out the trays and swapped them-no luck
The strange thing is they both worked fine last year.

On the other hand, the problem doesn't happen always so it might be that it is not properly latching or aligning inside the changer. It could just be that it had been used more often than the other and key points are deteriorated not allowing it to be recognized by the changer, or that it might be slightly deformed and blocking the free travel of its trays...
I would compare it again to the good one looking for signs of wear and tear
