I went to 3 different places today trying to get a copy of my key made,
Every place could not help me the last one said try a locksmith but its going to run me $80.
How much have you guys paid?
And could I get a copy made without the chip to get in the door?
Im sure other places can be found for similar pricing.
The Vats pellet in the key is simply a resistor.
The code # and the resistance values are in the table below that I found somewhere on this forum. Measure your current key to find out which one is right for your car.
I first went to the dealer they were useless, they could order the key for $75 but couldn't cut the key on their prehistoric key machine. I went down the road to a hardware store that also has a locksmith service. The guy slide my key into a machine to check which resistor my key had, then $16 bucks later I was all set. I didn't want to wait around to have it mailed, then with my luck it be the wrong resistor, then see if someone might cut it for me.
I never had any luck trying to find a 5 dollar solution to a 10 dollar problem, I would rather just deal with the locksmith.
I had the local locksmith cut it and I walked outside and tested it. Perfect $14.95 later and than got a extra fob on e-bay. Now I have a third key just in case. Less than $20.00 got piece of mind. Can't be too prepared, I am so happy that I did not second guess my self with the extra house insurence. We got hammered with Sandy and we everything covered and replaced.

As mentioned above, a local locksmith should be able to provide the key and cut it for you. Or buy one off the auction site (correct resistance value) and have it cut locally.
Thanks I will go to a local locksmith and see what happens.
I found a video that showed me how to check the ohms, I will post later for anybody who might need it.
I wonder why nobody is making keys with the corvette logo on them?
I had the same issue. I found a video on the internet that tells you how to use a ohm meter to test for the resistance. My ky turned out to be code 8 based on the ohms. I purchased one off ebay and took to my local hardware store. Bingo, I know have a spare key.
