I went to the track a couple weeks ago and while in the lanes my car got up to 230 degrees and I know it was because I was sitting still but when your start to race it is still close to that temp. I was wanting to get the 160 or 180 tstat and I was wonder which one I should get and who to get it from.
I have <500 mi. on mine and I went to 230F just sitting at a routine traffic light for a couple minutes. At least one person on the Forum told me it's not unexpected for a high performance car. I don't if I buy that. The Z isn't "that" much different than my '99 C5 which only went hot in big-time traffic jams. On my way to the dealer next week about this and a break squeal and burning rubber odor problems. Can't help you on the thermostat question. Good luck. :D
The occasional foray into the 230 degree zone is normal but not what I would say is desirable.
I'm going to install a 172 deg stat in my 02 Z06 along with a Vinci Constant Fan Monitor kit and a throttle body bypass. I had great luck with this setup on my 96 Grand Sport (using a 160 stat) and expect the same good results with the Z06. This is all available from Ecklers.
Installing a cooler stat alone will help some but not a lot since the fans still won't come on earlier. The Vinci kit works in conjunction with the ECM and allows you to set the fan ON temp with a set screw. The throttle body bypass is an easy mod that can't hurt if you never drive in freezing weather. Won't reduce coolant temps but might help preserve HP.
I'm in the same climate you are...just across town from you, actually. :)
One of the first mods I did was get the Exit-28 t-stat and fan controller. Simple install and my engine coolant temps on hot days driving in traffic never gets above 195-200^F. If I'm moving, the temps are in the 180-185^F range.
I have since purchased the LS1 Edit, and you can change the on/off temps for both fans with that if you'd rather go that route. But you'll still want a lower temp t-stat of some sort.
